THE STARTING XI (11 things you should know about the Falcons)
• The Falcons are 1-4-4 on the young season, after battling to a pair of double-overtime draws on the road last weekend. BGSU tied Marshall, 1-1, on Friday evening (Sept. 27), then played Northern Kentucky to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29).
• This season, the Falcons are 1-0-2 at home, 0-3-2 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches to date. The home matches include a 5-0 win over Malone in the season opener, and a pair of draws vs. Big Ten foes. BG tied Michigan, 1-1, on Labor Day (Sept. 2) and played Ohio State to a scoreless deadlock (Sept. 13) at Cochrane Field.
• BGSU's current five-game road swing is the team's longest in two years. Head coach Eric Nichols and Company went 3-1-1 on the last five-match swing, with wins over Duquesne, Pittsburgh and Detroit, a tie at Lipscomb and a loss at Belmont in mid-September of 2011.
• Last weekend's action came on the heels of a six-game stretch in which BG played five matches vs. teams either nationally-ranked or receiving votes in a national poll at the time. BG played three Big Ten opponents in a five-match span, and also faced Marquette, Milwaukee and UA on the road. The Buffalo game wraps up an eight-match stretch in which the Falcons played at Cochrane Field just once.
• Senior goalkeeper Michael Wiest has been in goal for every second of the Falcons' nine matches, and his 1-4-4 win-loss record is certainly not indicative of the way he has played this fall. Wiest made three stops at NKU to earn his third complete-match shutout of the season. He now has 37 saves, a goals-against average of just 0.91 and a saves percentage of .804. Wiest leads the MAC in saves, and ranks second in saves per game (4.11), saves pct. and GAA.
• Wiest's shutout at NKU was the 16th of his career. In that BGSU career, the Naperville, Ill., native has 180 saves, a saves pct. of .800 and a GAA of 1.05.
• Junior Danny Baraldi scored on a penalty kick in the second half of the Marshall match, snapping a Falcon scoreless streak of 558:06. BGSU had not scored a goal since the Sept. 2 match vs. U-M, and the Falcons had not held a lead since the season opener vs. Malone on Oct. 30.
• At the risk of bombarding you with negative stats, the Falcons still have not recorded a goal from scrimmage since senior Joey D'Agostino scored late in that U-M match on Labor Day. BGSU has gone 718:07 without scoring a goal in (or against) the run of play.
• The Falcons have seven goals on the season, scored by seven different players. Baraldi, D'Agostino, seniors Ryan Comiskey, Anthony Grant, Brandon Silva and Ryan Snashall and sophomore Ryan James each have found the back of the net.
• BGSU has a total of five assists, with five different players recording one each. Three players – Comiskey, Grant and James – have a goal and an assist, and are tied for the team scoring lead with three points apiece.
• Seven Falcons have started all nine of BGSU's matches to date. That list includes D'Agostino, Grant, Silva and Wiest, along with seniors Zach Schewee and Sean Sikich and sophomore Jake Genrich.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 1-4-4 on the young season. After a 5-0 win over Malone and a 1-1 tie against Michigan at Cochrane Field, BG suffered a pair of shutout losses to Marquette and host Milwaukee at the latter school's Panther Invitational. The Brown and Orange returned home and battled Ohio State to a scoreless draw on Sept. 13. BG suffered narrow 1-0 road losses vs. Michigan State and Akron, then tied both Marshall and Northern Kentucky, with both of those matches on the road as well. Seven different players have scored one goal apiece, while five different Falcons each have one assist on the year.
In goal, senior Michael Wiest has started all nine matches this season to date. He has 37 saves, three shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.91. Wiest and fellow senior Sean Sikich each have played all 890 minutes this season, while senior Zach Schewee has been on the pitch for 885 minutes and senior Brandon Silva 877.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff returned a total of 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club. The 2012 Falcons finished with an overall record of 8-9-3 and a MAC mark of 3-3-1. BGSU tied for fourth in the league regular-season standings last fall, and qualified for the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo enters Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 1-6-3, and that game marks the Bulls' MAC opener. UB is looking to snap a two-match losing streak, as the Bulls fell at home to Cornell and on the road to Robert Morris last weekend. The team's lone win to date came at Cleveland State (1-0, Sept. 22), and UB has earned draws with Vermont, Canisius and Detroit. The Bulls are 0-1-2 at home and 1-5-1 on the road this fall. Individually, Russell Cicerone has scored three of the Bulls' six goals this year, and he leads the team with six points. Braden Culver has two assists to pace the team in that department. In goal, Waleed Cassis has played in all 10 matches, and has 34 saves, two shutouts, and a goals-against average of 1.18. Head coach Stu Riddle inherited seven letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's club that went 5-11-1 overall and 3-4-0 in MAC play. Riddle came to UB after four seasons as the head coach at Western Michigan.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 10-7-0, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU won last year's meeting. Last Oct. 13, Anthony Grant scored two goals and Ryan Comiskey also found the back of the net in a 3-0 BG victory over the Bulls at Cochrane Field. Michael Wiest made four saves in that match. In the Falcons' last trip to UB Stadium, however, the Bulls posted the most lopsided victory by either team in series history. The 2011 meeting saw UB explode for five second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win (Oct. 9, 2011). The Falcons are 4-4-0 in home games, 5-3-0 in road contests and 1-0-0 in neutral-site meetings against UB. BG has scored 26 goals to the Bulls' 24 in the first 17 matchups. The complete list of match-by-match series results can be found on page 4 of the PDF version of this release.
THE 2013 CAPTAINS
Seniors Joey D'Agostino, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest are the tri-captains of the 2013 Falcons. Silva, a fifth-year senior, is a team captain for the third consecutive year, while D'Agostino, also in his fifth year, has been named a captain for the second-straight season.
THE 89TH MINUTE (a few final Falcon notes)
• Junior Danny Baraldi's goal at Marshall gives him a total of 12 goals as a Falcon. He has 39 career points in 44 matches at BGSU, and leads all active Falcons in goals, assists (15) and points.
• Redshirt freshman Max Auden had four shots in Sunday's match at NKU. That total was by far the highest of his brief BGSU career to date. He entered Sunday's match with a career total of three shot attempts.
• The Falcons have played four double-overtime games in nine matches this season to date. BGSU and the opponents have battled through 80 minutes of scoreless OT play, as all four of those matches have ended in draws.
• All seven of BGSU's October matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. So far in 2013, the Falcons are undefeated (1-0-2) in matches that start at 7:00 p.m., and winless (0-4-2) in games that kick off at any other time of the day.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Buffalo match, BGSU returns home for the next three games. The Falcons face Detroit at Cochrane Field on Tuesday (Oct. 8), and the homestand also includes matches vs. Northern Illinois (Oct. 12) and Cleveland State (Oct. 16). After trips to Davidson (Oct. 19) and Wright State (Oct. 22), the Brown and Orange will end the month of October with a home match vs. Hartwick on Oct. 26.
