Hartwick men's soccer
The Hartwick match is the middle contest in a B!G weekend at Cochrane, as the BGSU women's soccer team plays a pair of home matches this weekend as well. The women's soccer Falcons will host Ball State on Friday night (Oct. 25) and Miami on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27), with the latter match marking Senior Day for coach Lindsay Basalyga's program.
BGSU WEEKEND SOCCER SCHEDULE
Friday, Oct. 25 - BG women vs. Ball State, 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 26 - BG men vs. Hartwick, 7:00 p.m. (Senior Night)
Sunday, Oct. 27 - BG women vs. Miami, 1:00 p.m. (Senior Day)
A total of 10 Falcon men's soccer seniors will be recognized prior to the Hartwick match, which is BG's final home regular-season weekend contest. That group includes Ryan Comiskey, Joey D'Agostino, Anthony Grant, Matt Griesinger, Rodcliff Hall, Zach Schewee, Sean Sikich, Brandon Silva, Ryan Snashall and Michael Wiest.
The Falcons are 5-6-4 on the season, and BGSU is 2-1-0 in MAC play. BG has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season after picking up a pair of shutouts on the road. The Brown and Orange posted a a convincing 2-0 win at Davidson on Saturday (Oct. 19), then went to Wright State and won a 1-0, double-overtime match.
Freshman Joe Sullivan gave BGSU the lead just six minutes into the Davidson match, and junior Danny Baraldi provided some insurance with a late goal. Michael Wiest had eight saves in net for the Falcons.
At WSU, the Falcons dominated possession time, but the match was scoreless until an own goal in the 104th minute of the match. The victory gave the Falcons possession of the I-75 Cup, a travelling trophy that goes to the winner of the BGSU-Wright State match each year. The Falcons have won three of the four meetings since BG head coach Eric Nichols and WSU coach Bryan Davis came up with the idea prior to the 2010 season.
After the victory at Davidson, the Falcons are looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. BG has not won two games in a row since a three-game streak last October.
Entering the weekend, the Falcons and Hawks are two of the three teams in the MAC with six points apiece (teams earn three points for a conference win and one for a tie). Akron is atop the league with a 3-1 mark, good for nine points, while Western Michigan is 2-0, BG 2-1 and HC 2-2 in league play to date.
Grant leads the team with three goals and seven points. Baraldi and Sullivan are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece. Sullivan is second on the Falcons with six points this fall, while Baraldi has five.
In goal, Wiest has played every second of every match this season to date. He has 58 saves, seven shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.74. In three MAC matches, Wiest has a GAA of just 0.32 and a saves pct. of .900.
A LOOK AT THE HAWKS
Hartwick has a 4-7-2 overall record, and the Hawks are 2-2-0 in MAC play. The Hawks opened conference action with a pair of key wins, including a 2-0 victory at Akron and a 1-0 home win over West Virginia. 'Wick's last two matches, however, have been one-goal losses, at Buffalo (2-1) and at home vs. Western Michigan (1-0). The Hawks are 3-2-1 at home, 1-4-1 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches to date. Individually, Will Broomfield leads the offense with four goals and 10 points. Mateo Munarriz has played every second of every match in goal, and has 38 saves, three shutouts and a GAA of 1.17. Head coach John Scott and the Hawks finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 5-10-2 and a MAC mark of 2-5-0.
THE SERIES
BGSU and Hartwick are deadlocked, 2-2-3, in the all-time series, with the teams playing to three double-overtime draws in as many meetings at Cochrane Field. Last year, the host Hawks downed the Falcons, 2-0, on a pair of shots that were deflected by BGSU defenders (Sept. 28, 2012). That result snapped a three-match series unbeaten streak for the Falcons. Two years ago, in the last meeting at BGSU, the Falcons and Hawks battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in the first-ever BG men's soccer night game at Cochrane Field (Oct. 22, 2011). After a 1-0 BGSU win in 1984, the teams did not play again until Hartwick became an affiliate member of the MAC in 2007.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Next week, the Falcons play just one match, heading to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2. Then, the Falcons host IPFW three days later (Tuesday, Nov. 5) at Cochrane Field, before ending the regular season with a match at West Virginia on Friday, Nov. 8.
