BGSU Athletics Remains A Model For Graduating Student-Athletes
October 30, 2013 | General
Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA recently released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. Fourteen of BGSU's 18 teams had a GSR equal to or better than the national average of 82 percent and the department's 83 percent GSR was tied for third among all MAC schools.
Four of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR and another four are at least at 90 percent. Hockey, women's golf, tennis and volleyball all ranked with a perfect graduation success rate for the second consecutive year, while swimming (94 percent), women's basketball (93 percent), gymnastics (92 percent) and women's soccer (90 percent) posted exemplary marks.
"This annual release of data continues to confirm what holds true as our standard expectation," Mark Shook, Associate Athletics Director, said. "We expect our student-athletes to compete in the classroom, as well as on the playing field, and to graduate in higher numbers than our peer Division I institutions. All BGSU fans can be proud of the fact that we make every effort to recruit and retain the best students and the best athletes possible."
Fourteen of the Falcons' 18 sports ranked among the top half in the conference, with each of the four sports with a perfect GSR tying for first in the league. Swimming ranks second in the MAC and women's basketball is tied for third. Women's cross country, track and field, men's soccer, men's cross country and football were all fourth, baseball was fifth and women's soccer tied for sixth.
In addition, the overall grade point average for BGSU student-athletes reached a record 3.13 for all 18 sports at the conclusion of the spring 2013 term.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2003-04 through 2006-07 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
