THE STARTING XI (11 things you should know about the Falcons)
• The Falcons are 2-4-4 on the young season, and BGSU is 1-1-0 in MAC play after picking up a 1-0 win at Buffalo on Friday night (Oct. 4). Freshman Joe Sullivan scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 81st minute, and it proved to be the game winner.
• Senior goalkeeper Michael Wiest made two saves as he and the BG defense recorded the shutout at UB. The clean sheet was Wiest's fourth of the season, and his second in as many matches. Wiest now has 17 shutouts in his career.
• The win at UB was BG's first road victory of the season. The 2013 Falcons are 1-0-2 at home, 1-3-2 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches to date.
• The Falcons' home matches have included a 5-0 win over Malone in the season opener on Aug. 30, and a pair of draws vs. Big Ten foes. BG tied Michigan, 1-1, on Labor Day (Sept. 2) and played Ohio State to a scoreless deadlock (Sept. 13) at Cochrane Field.
• Believe it or not, the Falcons' win at Buffalo snapped an eight-match winless streak, dating to that Malone match. Just four of those eight matches were losses, as the Brown and Orange battled to four double-overtime draws, tying Marshall (Sept. 27) and Northern Kentucky (Sept. 29) in addition to U-M and OSU.
• So, while the Falcons snapped an eight-match winless streak in the UB game, that win also gave the Brown and Orange a three-match unbeaten streak heading into the Detroit contest.
• Sullivan's goal at UB was the Falcons' second in three matches, after BG had been blanked in the previous five games. The Brown and Orange scored at Marshall, with that goal coming on a penalty kick. Sullivan's goal was the Falcons' first from scrimmage in a span of 798:25.
• BGSU's eight goals this season have been scored by eight different players.
• Junior Danny Baraldi picked up his first assist of the year on Sullivan's goal. Baraldi now has 40 career points on 12 goals and 16 assists. He leads all active Falcons in career goals, assists and points.
• Wiest has been in goal for every second of the Falcons' 10 matches, and his 2-4-4 win-loss record is certainly not indicative of the way he has played this fall. Wiest has four complete-match shutouts, as mentioned, this season to date. He also has 39 saves, a goals-against average of just 0.83 and a saves percentage of .812. Wiest currently leads the MAC in saves pct., and ranks second in the league in GAA, saves and shutouts.
• In that BGSU career, the Naperville, Ill., native has 182 saves, a saves pct. of .802 and a GAA of 1.02.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 2-4-4 on the season, and BGSU is 1-1-0 in MAC play after Friday's (Oct. 4) 1-0 win at Buffalo. The Brown and Orange will take a three-match unbeaten streak into Tuesday's Detroit match, having battled to a pair of double-overtime draws at Marshall (1-1, Sept. 27) and Northern Kentucky (0-0, Sept. 29) prior to facing the Bulls.
BGSU is 1-0-2 at home, with a win over Malone in the regular-season opener and a pair of ties vs. Big Ten Conference opponents in Michigan and Ohio State. The Falcons played three Big Ten foes in a five-match span, and the Falcons went though a six-game September stretch in which five opponents were either nationally ranked or receiving votes in a national poll at kickoff time.
BG's losses have come to Marquette at a neutral site (although the match was in the same city – Milwaukee – in which MU is located) and Milwaukee, Michigan State and Akron on the road.
The Falcons have eight goals on the season, scored by eight different players. That group includes seniors Ryan Comiskey, Joey D'Agostino, Anthony Grant, Brandon Silva and Ryan Snashall, junior Danny Baraldi, sophomore Ryan James and freshman Joe Sullivan.
BGSU has a total of six assists, with six different players recording one each. Four players – Baraldi, Comiskey, Grant and James – have a goal and an assist, and are tied for the team scoring lead with three points apiece.
Seven Falcons have started all 10 of BGSU's matches to date. That list includes D'Agostino, Grant and Silva, along with seniors Zach Schewee, Sean Sikich and Michael Wiest and sophomore Jake Genrich.
In goal, Wiest has played every second of every match this season to date. He has 39 saves, four shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.83. In two MAC matches, Wiest has a GAA of 0.50 and a saves pct. of .875.
Wiest and Sikich each have played all 980 minutes this season, while Schewee has been on the pitch for 975 minutes and Silva 967.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff returned a total of 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club. The 2012 Falcons finished with an overall record of 8-9-3 and a MAC mark of 3-3-1. BGSU tied for fourth in the league regular-season standings last fall, and qualified for the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit enters Tuesday's BGSU match with an overall record of 1-5-4, and the Titans are 0-2-0 in Horizon League play to date. UDM is 0-2-2 at home, 1-2-0 on the road and 0-1-2 in neutral-site games, and the Titans have been outscored by just a 15-11 count this year. Detroit posted a 3-1 win at IPFW last week (Oct. 1) before falling to Oakland, 2-1, on Saturday (Oct. 5). Adam Bedell leads the team with five goals and 13 points this season, including a pair of goals in the IPFW match. Kevin Pinkos paces the Titans with three assists this fall. In goal, Nathan Steinwascher has played every second of every match, and has 54 saves, two shutouts, and a goals-against average of 1.35. Head coach Nick Deren welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club that went 10-9-0 overall and won the Horizon League regular-season title with a 6-1-0 mark. Bedell was named the league's player of the year last fall after pacing the HL with 11 goals and 27 points.
THAT NAME SOUNDS VAGUELY FAMILIAR
Falcon fifth-year senior Joey D'Agostino's brother, John, is a freshman on the men's soccer team at Detroit. John D'Agostino has played in seven of the team's 10 matches to date, making one start, for the Titans.
A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES
Northern Illinois has a 3-7-0 overall record, and the Huskies are 0-1-0 in MAC play. NIU plays a Wednesday (Oct. 9) match at Northwestern prior to facing the Falcons this weekend. Northern suffered a 4-0 loss at West Virginia in the team's MAC opener Saturday night (Nov. 5). The Huskies are 1-1 at home, 0-3 on the road and 2-3 in neutral-site contests. Individually, James Stevenson and Isaac Kannah have combined for six of the team's 10 goals. Each player has scored three times, and Stevenson leads the Huskies with seven points while Kannah has six. Andrew Palumbo, with two assists this fall, is the lone player with more than one. In net, Andrew Glaeser has started eight of the 10 matches, and has 35 saves, one shutout and a 1.47 GAA. Head coach Eric Luzzi returned 10 letterwinners, including six starters, from last year's club. The 2012 Huskies went 7-10-3 overall, but tied for second in the MAC with a 4-2-1 conference mark.
SCHEDULING ANOMALY
Each MAC school plays six conference regular-season matches, but two of those teams – BGSU and Northern Illinois – play just two league home games this fall. The Falcons host only NIU and Hartwick in regular-season #MACtion. The Huskies play the first four league contests on the road. In fact, Northern does not play a home MAC match until the final week of the regular season, with home conference games on Nov. 5 and Nov. 9. Buffalo and West Virginia each have four MAC home games, while Akron, Hartwick and Western Michigan all have three.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Detroit, 16-7-2, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Titans captured last season's meeting. UDM broke a two-match BG series winning streak with a 2-0 triumph over the Falcons at Cochrane Field (Sept. 18, 2012). In fact, Detroit has won two-straight matches in BG, including a 3-2, come-from-behind overtime win four years ago (Nov. 4, 2009). The home team has not won a match in the series since 2007, as BG captured victories in the Motor City in 2010 and '11, and the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in 2008. The Falcons are 8-3-1 at home and 8-4-1 on the road vs. the Titans through the years.
Northern Illinois leads BGSU, 16-7-1, in that series, and the Huskies are unbeaten in the last seven meetings. After a 3-1 BG win in the 2007 regular-season game, the Huskies won each of the next six matchups, before the teams played to a scoreless double-OT draw in DeKalb last Oct. 20. Michael Wiest made eight saves in that match. In the last meeting at Cochrane, Northern picked up a 3-0 win in the second home night game in BGSU men's soccer program history (Oct. 29, 2011). All-time, the Falcons are 6-6-0 at home, 1-9-1 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the Huskies.
The complete list of the Falcons' match-by-match series results against both Detroit and NIU can be found on page 4 of the PDF version of these notes.
SEVEN IS HEAVEN?
All seven of BGSU's October matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. So far in 2013, the Falcons are undefeated (2-0-2) in matches that start at 7:00 p.m., and winless (0-4-2) in games that kick off at any other time of the day.
THE 2013 CAPTAINS
Seniors Joey D'Agostino, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest are the tri-captains of the 2013 Falcons. Silva, a fifth-year senior, is a team captain for the third consecutive year, while D'Agostino, also in his fifth year, has been named a captain for the second-straight season.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following this week's matches vs. Detroit and NIU, the Falcons conclude a three-match homestand by facing Cleveland State on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Then, after trips to Davidson (Oct. 19) and Wright State (Oct. 22), the Brown and Orange will end the month of October with a home match vs. Hartwick on Oct. 26.
