Earlier this month (Nov. 1), Silva earned Academic All-District First-Team honors, making him eligible for consideration to the Academic All-America® Team. Two weeks later (Nov. 15), he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team.
Silva is currently in his first semester in graduate school at BGSU as a kinesiology major. He graduated from the University in May of 2013, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in Spanish. Silva had a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average during his undergraduate career.
Silva, a native of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne H.S.), was a BGSU team captain for the third consecutive year in 2013. He started all 19 of the Falcons' matches this fall at a defensive midfielder position, and played 1,846 of the 1,866 total minutes on the season. Silva had a total of six points on two goals and a pair of assists in 2013. He finished tied for fourth on the team in both goals and points, and he deadlocked for third on the Falcons in assists.
Silva, who played four seasons with the Falcons after transferring from the University of Akron, had career totals of 17 points on six goals and five assists. He played in 74 career matches for the Falcons, starting all 74.
Off the field, Silva was named BGSU's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the Athletic Honors Night ceremony in April of 2013. The award is given to just one male and one female among all BGSU student-athletes each year. He also earned honorable mention on the Academic All-MAC Team in 2012 after being named to the first team the previous year.
Silva was named to the Academic All-Ohio Team by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) in 2011. He started every match in 2010, 2012 and '13, and missed just one match in 2011, due to injury.
Previous men's soccer Academic All-America® Team selections by CoSIDA include Greg Murphy (1991), Joe Burch (1995 - Third Team and 1996 - First Team), Ty Fowler (1999 - First Team) and Lawrence (2009 - First Team). Murphy, Burch and Fowler earned GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America® Fall/Winter At-Large Team honors, as men's soccer did not have its own separate team selected at that time.
The Capital One Academic All-District Teams were the result of voting by CoSIDA members within their respective districts. BGSU is in District 5, which consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. To qualify for nomination to the district team, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, he must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
The first-team all-district selections then were added to the ballot for Academic All-America® honors, and the national team was determined by a vote of members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee as well as the CoSIDA Board of Directors.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 19,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
