Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics held its annual Athletics Honors Night Monday with more than 400 student-athletes, parents, staff and community members in attendance. Wake Forest Director of Athletics Ron Wellman, a BGSU graduate, was the keynote speaker and Distinguished Alumnus for the evening.
Football player Chris Jones and tennis player Maddy Eccleston earned the Falcon Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the department. The award is given to the male and female student-athlete who embody the essence of the qualities BGSU Athletics holds important for all student-athletes -- scholarship, athletics, leadership and service.
Jones also received the department's Male Athlete of the Year Award, while volleyball player Paige Penrod earned the Female Athlete of the Year. Swimmer Jen Beatty and men's soccer player Zach Lemke were named the Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while volleyball player Laura Avila and men's soccer player Brandon Silva earned the Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
The BGSU tennis team was named the female highest GPA award with a team grade point average of 3.74. The hockey team, with a 3.42 GPA, earned the male equivalent. Finally, Dr. Richard Barker received the Distinguished Service award for 35 years of service to BGSU Athletics.
BGSU's student-athletes combined for a school-record 3.11 grade point average through the fall of 2012 and 210 student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In fact, 24 student-athletes have a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
