Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA has announced that 976 Division I athletics teams, including the Bowling Green State University women's golf program, have been publicly recognized for their high marks academically. Teams are recognized for scoring in the top 10 percent of Division I programs for their sport in the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
“The NCAA's quintessential student-athlete exhibits dedication and commitment both on the playing field and in the classroom,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “These teams and programs truly embody the overall values of the NCAA, and have exceeded standards to post fantastic academic scores. We are delighted by such a clear example of our membership's commitment to providing well-rounded experiences to student-athletes.”
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released June 11.
Each year, the NCAA honors Division I teams by publicly recognizing their most recent multiyear NCAA Division I APR. A total of 268 schools, out of 346 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list. Bowling Green is one of only 61 schools at the Division I level, including one of only two Mid-American Conference schools, to have received public recognition awards in each of the eight years of the program. BGSU's tennis team also received public recognition today.
“This recognition reflects the commitment of BGSU in the development of our student-athletes, both in competition and in the classroom,” BGSU Women's Golf Coach Stephanie Young said. “It is also indicative of the dedication and desire these young women have in achieving to their highest potential.”
It marks the fourth time that the BGSU Women's Golf team has been honored with public recognition in the eight-year existence of the program. The program was also honored in 2005, 2006 and 2007. This year's team has a perfect 1000 APR score both in multiyear and single-season rate.
On the course, the BGSU women's golf team had success during the season, winning the Cleveland State Invitational and the Butler Fall Invitational. The Falcons defeated Ohio in the Spring Challenge Cup and placed second at the Redbird Invitational, the Ursuline College Fall Tournament and The Preview. Also, the team finished sixth at the MAC Championships with its best 54-hole score in MAC Championship history. Amy Ruthenberg and Shelby Wilson were both named Academic All-MAC, while Bailey Arnold and Patricia Holt earned honorable mention status.
