The first set was played evenly throughout, as no team ever led by more than four points. With the White team leading 15-11, the Orange would score the next five points, to take a 16-15 lead. The rally was led by two Allison Papenfuss kills, and three White team attack errors. The White team would rebound to score four of the next five points in the set, and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. However, with the White team leading 24-21, the Orange team would rally to score three straight points to even the set at 24 apiece. With the set even at 25, the White team would get back-to-back kills by Danielle Tonyan and Lindsey Butterfield to close out the first set with a 27-25 win.
The Orange team would jump out to a quick start in the second set, scoring the first four points, thanks to two Paige Penrod kills. Four straight points by the White team would even the set, thanks to three errors by the Orange team. The Orange team would lead 22-17 later in the set, before the White grabbed momentum with two straight Butterfield kills. After an attack error by the Orange team, the White team would even the match at 22 courtesy of consecutive service aces by Libby Dachenhaus. The White team would finish the set by scoring eight of the final nine points, grabbing a two set lead with a 25-23 second set triumph.
After the Orange team got the first point in the third set on a Penrod kill, the White team would score nine of the next 12 points to jump out to a commanding 9-to-4 lead in the set. The Orange would not quit, however, as they would eventually battle back to take a 13-to-12 lead in the set. The set would remain close until the White team would finally pull away at the end for the 25-19 set victory, and the three-set match victory.
Tonyan led the White team's attack on Saturday afternoon, recording a match-high 16 kills and an attack percentage of .483. The White was helped by the Orange team's errors in the match, as they recorded 26 attack errors and nine service errors.
Penrod, along with freshman Jelena Sunjic, led the Orange team with 13 kills each. For the White team, Dachenhaus had 15 digs to lead the way. Another freshman that stood out on the afternoon was Alyssa Maloney, as she recorded eight kills and a match-high six blocks from the middle.
The Falcons now look to the regular season, as they have six days to prepare for the upcoming Hampton Inn Invitational. The tournament, which will be held on August 30-31, will feature Bowling Green, Marquette, No. 25 Creighton, and No. 13 BYU inside the Stroh Center. The Falcons will begin tournament play on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against Marquette. On Saturday, the Falcons will face a pair of ranked foes, playing Creighton at 10:00 a.m. and BYU at 7:00 p.m.
