FREE ADMISSION TO HOME FALCON FUTBOL
Admission for all Falcon men's and women's soccer home matches again this season is free. For those who can't make it to Cochrane Field, live stats are scheduled to be available for each home game via BGSUFalcons.com.
THE STARTING XI (11 things you should know about the Falcons)
• The Falcons are 1-2-1 on the young season. BGSU opened the regular season with a 5-0 win over Malone (Aug. 30), then battled three consecutive nationally-ranked foes. The Falcons played Michigan to a 1-1, double-overtime draw last Monday (Sept. 2), then dropped games to Marquette (3-0; Sept. 6) and host Milwaukee (2-0; Sept. 8) at the Panther Invitational over the weekend.
• Seniors Zach Schewee and Brandon Silva were named to the all-tournament team at the Panther Invitational.
• Eric Nichols faces his alma mater on Friday night, as the BGSU head coach is a 2000 graduate of OSU. Nichols played soccer for the Buckeyes under coach Gary Avedikian, and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.
• Friday's OSU match marks the Falcons' only home contest in a month's time. Beginning with last weekend's Marquette match, the Brown and Orange play away from home seven times in an eight-game span.
• The Falcons have six goals on the season, scored by six different players. Silva, fellow seniors Ryan Comiskey, Joey D'Agostino, Anthony Grant and Ryan Snashall and sophomore Ryan James each have found the back of the net.
• BGSU has a total of five assists, with five different players recording one each. Three players – Comiskey, Grant and James – each have a goal and an assist, and are tied for the team scoring lead with three points apiece.
• The OSU match is BGSU's second-straight home contest against a Big Ten Conference foe. The Falcons' last home game was the aforementioned Michigan game on Labor Day (Sept. 2).
• That U-M match was played before a crowd of 2,273 at Cochrane. BGSU men's soccer attendance records are incomplete prior to the 1997 season, but that crowd was the largest BGSU home attendance in that time.
• Eight Falcons have started all four of BGSU's matches to date. That list includes D'Agostino, Grant, Schewee and Silva, along with seniors Matt Griesinger, Sean Sikich and Michael Wiest and sophomore Jake Genrich.
• Sikich and Wiest each have played all 380 minutes of the Falcons' four matches to date, while Schewee has been on the pitch for 375 minutes and Silva 367.
• Grant has taken 14 total shots, putting eight of those on goal, this year. No other Falcon has more than eight shot attempts or two SOG.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 1-2-1 on the young season. After a 5-0 win over Malone and a 1-1 tie against Michigan at Cochrane Field, BG suffered a pair of shutout losses to Marquette and host Milwaukee at the latter school's Panther Invitational. Six different players have scored one goal apiece, while five different Falcons each have one assist on the year.
In goal, senior Michael Wiest has played all 380 minutes this season to date. He has 17 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of 1.42.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff returned a total of 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club. The 2012 Falcons finished with an overall record of 8-9-3 and a MAC mark of 3-3-1. BGSU tied for fourth in the league regular-season standings last fall, and qualified for the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State enters Friday's BGSU match with a record of 2-2-0. The Buckeyes have posted wins over Northern Illinois and SMU, while losing to UNC Wilmington and Tulsa. The Wilmington and NIU matches took place in Columbus, with the other two contests coming at the Tulsa Classic. OSU's five goals this season to date have been scored by five different players, and the Buckeyes have five assists, with no player having registered more than one. Sage Gardner and Christian Soldat lead the team with three points apiece. In goal, Alex Ivanov has played every minute, and has 29 saves, two shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.44. Head coach John Bleum, in his 17th year, welcomed back 11 letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago. The 2012 edition of the Buckeyes went 6-10-3 overall and 0-4-2 in Big Ten Conference play.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Ohio State, 24-14-2, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Buckeyes have captured each of the last four matches. OSU picked up a 2-0 victory in Columbus last year (Oct. 10, 2012) after posting 1-0 wins in each of the previous three matchups. The first of those 1-0 OSU wins came in the Buckeyes' last trip to Cochrane Field, six years ago (Sept. 20, 2007). BGSU's last win in the series was a 3-2, double-overtime decision at Cochrane on Sept. 23, 2005. Through the years, the Falcons are 14-4-0 at home, 9-10-2 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the Buckeyes.
THE 2013 CAPTAINS
Seniors Joey D'Agostino, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest are the tri-captains of the 2013 Falcons. Silva, a fifth-year senior, is a team captain for the third consecutive year, while D'Agostino, also in his fifth year, has been named a captain for the second-straight season.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Ohio State match, BGSU embarks upon a stretch of five consecutive road contests, beginning with trips to Michigan State (Sept. 18) and Akron (Sept. 21) next week. The OSU game marks BG's lone home game in an eight-match, month-long span, as the road swing also includes matches at Marshall (Sept. 27), Northern Kentucky (Sept. 29) and Buffalo (Oct. 4).
