THE STARTING XI (11 things you should know about the Falcons)
• The Falcons are 1-0-1 on the young season, after playing a pair of matches at Cochrane Field over Labor Day weekend. BGSU opened the regular season with a 5-0 win over Malone on Friday night (Aug. 30), then battled nationally-ranked Michigan to a 1-1, double-overtime draw on Monday (Sept. 2).
• Through two matches, the Falcons have six goals, scored by six different players. Seniors Ryan Comiskey, Joey D'Agostino, Anthony Grant, Brandon Silva and Ryan Snashall and sophomore Ryan James each have found the back of the net.
• BGSU has a total of five assists, with five different players recording one each. Three players – Comiskey, Grant and Silva – each have a goal and an assist, and are tied for the team scoring lead with three points apiece.
• The Michigan match was played before a crowd of 2,273 at Cochrane. BGSU men's soccer attendance records are incomplete prior to the 1997 season, but Monday's crowd was the largest BGSU home attendance in that time.
• The largest previous crowd during that 16-plus-year span was 2,133, set the last time Michigan came to Cochrane. BG posted a 2-0 win in that 2011 match, and the Falcons now have a three-match unbeaten streak against the Wolverines.
• Senior goalkeeper Michael Wiest made seven saves vs. U-M on Monday. Wiest made his collegiate debut in BG's 2010 game in Ann Arbor, playing 29-plus scoreless minutes. Then, he kept clean sheets vs. the Wolverines in the Falcons' wins in both 2011 and '12, before finally giving up a goal in Monday's match.
• In his career, Wiest has a 2-0-1 record, 17 saves (including stopping a penalty kick in the 2012 game) and a goals-against average of just 0.28 vs. Michigan.
• Grant has scored at better than a point-per-match pace during his Bowling Green tenure. In his second season with the Falcons, the Kingston, Jamaica, native has 23 points in 22 matches with the Brown and Orange.
• Grant's goal vs. Malone proved to be the match winner, giving him a total of six GWG since arriving at BGSU. He has had either the game-winning goal or a game-winning assist in eight of BG's nine wins since he joined the Falcons.
• Redshirt freshman Max Auden picked up his first career assist in his first collegiate match, with a helper on the James goal vs. Malone.
• Wiest posted his 14th career shutout, and his third in as many regular-season openers, in the Malone match. He also picked up his first career assist in that win.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 1-0-1 on the young season, after a 5-0 win over Malone and a 1-1 tie against Michigan. Both of those matches were played at Cochrane Field over Labor Day weekend. Six different players have scored one goal apiece, while five different Falcons each have one assist on the year.
Three players have three points each, on a goal and an assist. That list includes seniors Ryan Comiskey, Anthony Grant and Brandon Silva.
In goal, senior Michael Wiest has played all 200 minutes this season to date. He has a 1-0-1 record, eight saves, a goals-against average of 0.45 and a save percentage of .889, along with one shutout.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff – assistant coaches Charlie Edwards, Greg Hennelly and Zach Lemke – returned a total of 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club. The 2012 Falcons finished with an overall record of 8-9-3 and a MAC mark of 3-3-1. BGSU tied for fourth in the league regular-season standings last fall, and qualified for the MAC Tournament.
Nine players have started both matches for the Falcons. That list includes Grant, Silva and Wiest, along with fellow seniors Joey D'Agostino, Matt Griesinger, Zach Schewee and Sean Sikich and sophomores Jake Genrich and Ryan James.
In addition to Wiest, Sikich has played all 200 minutes of the first two matches. Both Sikich and Wiest have played every second of every match since the start of the 2012 season. Schewee has been on the pitch for 195 minutes and Silva 187 this fall.
D'Agostino already has played more minutes than he did in all of 2012. The fifth-year Falcon started the first two matches last year before missing the remainder of the season due to injury. D'Agostino, who played 150 minutes last year, has played 164 minutes so far this season.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE
Marquette enters Friday's BGSU match with a record of 0-1-1 on the young season. The Golden Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision on the road to Milwaukee on Friday, before playing Green Bay to a 3-3 draw in MU's home opener Sunday. Marquette is ranked 16th in both the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer Madness polls, and 26th in the College Soccer News rankings. Freshman Jake Taylor leads the team in scoring, having recorded a pair of goals in the Green Bay match. Redshirt junior Charlie Lyon has played both matches in goal for head coach Louis Bennett, and has four saves and a goals-against average of 2.25. MU was picked to finish third in the Big East Conference in 2013. Last season, Marquette went 16-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships.
A LOOK AT MILWAUKEE
Milwaukee is 1-0-0 on the young season, after last weekend's win over Marquette. The victory was the program's first over a ranked team since the 2005 season. After that win, the Panthers are ranked 24th in the nation in the Soccer America poll, as well as ninth in the Great Lakes Region in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire poll. UWM hosts Drake on Friday before meeting the Falcons on Sunday. Sophomore Declan Rodriquez and senior Austin Toth scored goals in the win over Marquette, while freshman Liam Anderson got the win in goal for coach Kris Keldermann. The Panthers went 8-8-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the Horizon League last year.
THE SERIES
BGSU and Marquette are tied, 6-6-1, in the all-time series between the teams. The Falcons and Golden Eagles have not met since the 1997 campaign, when the Brown and Orange posted a 1-0 win in NCAA Tournament action in Milwaukee. That match marks BGSU's most recent win in the national tourney. Friday's match will be the teams' first-ever meeting on a neutral field. BGSU is 4-3-0 at home and 2-3-1 in road matches vs. Marquette over the years, and the Falcons have scored 19 goals while allowing 16 in the series. BG and MU met in every season from 1984 to 1995, but the only meeting since then was the '97 NCAA Championships match.
BGSU leads Milwaukee by a 4-3-1 count in that series, and the Falcons have won three consecutive meetings. Last year, Danny Baraldi's penalty kick in the second overtime gave the Falcons a 2-1 win at Cochrane Field (Sept. 25, 2012). Anthony Grant also scored in the win, which was the Falcons' first meeting with the Panthers since the 2001 season. BGSU is 3-1-0 vs. UWM at home, 1-2-0 on the road and 0-0-1 at a neutral site. The Falcons and Panthers played four times between 1977 and '83, then met in 1992 before playing in Milwaukee in 2000 and BG the next fall. The Falcons have scored 14 goals and allowed 13 in the eight series meetings.
THE 2013 CAPTAINS
Seniors Joey D'Agostino, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest are the tri-captains of the 2013 Falcons. Silva, a fifth-year senior, is a team captain for the third consecutive year, while D'Agostino, also in his fifth year, has been named a captain for the second-straight season.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Milwaukee trip, the schedule gets no easier for the Falcons. BGSU returns home to face Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 13, at Cochrane Field, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. After the OSU match, the Falcons hit the road for five consecutive contests, beginning with trips to Michigan State (Sept. 18) and Akron (Sept. 21).Friday's Marquette match begins a month-long stretch in which BG will play away from home seven times in an eight-match span.
