Reception Highlights Legacy Of BGSU Athletics
October 23, 2014 | General
More than 250 people enjoyed a weekend of camaraderie and reconnecting with former teammates and friends during Legacy Weekend at Bowling Green State University Oct. 17-18. The Legacy Weekend celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Falcon Club and the 50th anniversary of the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, in addition to recognizing BGSU's Heritage Sports.
Also a part of the weekend was information on the progress of the Cochrane Cunningham Archive and Museum from Mickey Cochrane, the co-founder and curator of the archives and museum. Cochrane is also a former BGSU coach for soccer and lacrosse and is a member of the Hall of Fame.
Over the weekend, the former student-athletes were able to connect with friends, former teammates, former staff members and coaches, and just BGSU in general.
"Some of our goals for the weekend were to have folks return to BGSU and have an opportunity to reconnect," Chris Kingston, BGSU's Athletics Director, said. "I think we accomplished both of those goals. From the event Friday night to the tailgate tent Saturday pregame, the energy and the emotion you could sense from everybody … I thought it was powerful. We were able to realize the vision of what we anticipated it should be. Now we need to take the next steps to capitalize on that event and continue connecting with our alumni."
Approximately 60 Hall of Fame members returned for the weekend and were recognized at a reception in the Stroh Center Friday evening and on the field at Perry Stadium Saturday during the Bowling Green-Western Michigan football game.
On Friday night, each Hall of Fame member was announced individually by Tom Glick, who was the public address announcer for BGSU sports for almost 30 years. There were also approximately 50 former student-athletes present Friday evening along with family, friends and supporters of BGSU athletes. Also 50 current student-athletes had the opportunity to meet with the returnees before the reception started.
"I was blown away," Jane Myers, Assistant Athletics Director for Development, said. "I've been getting a lot of emails and text messages about how well the event went. People just loved it. They just thought it was great to reconnect. I think it met the marks on good feelings and the reconnection that we were hoping to obtain, and it was uplifting to all of us to see that."
Cochrane spoke about the archives and museum and also the plans for a Walk of Fame as well as BGSU's Heritage sports.
Kingston closed the program with the announcement that the Mickey Cochrane Legacy Award has been established. Dennis Vereb, a former lacrosse player for the Falcons, received the inaugural Mickey Cochrane Legacy Award.
