Falcons Build For 2015 Season
December 09, 2014 | Men's Cross Country
The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team concluded its season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet Nov. 14. Despite having just two upperclassmen, the youthful Falcon team took steps in the right direction this season.
Following the conference meet, BGSU's overall average time was 26:34, which is 27 seconds faster than in 2013. The spread between the Falcon top five was just 1:23. The year prior, the spread was just under three minutes. Six out of eight runners at the MAC meet, who all happened to be freshmen or redshirt freshmen, set career best times as well.
The Orange and Brown were the most improved team at the regional meet (point total) from 2012 to 2013 and continued to show signs of improvement at this year's race. BG had six athletes cross the line in 2014 with a time better than the team's number three runner last season.
Greg Black:
As the lone senior, Black's leadership on and off the course was crucial to this year's youthful team. In his first meet of the season, Black placed first on the team and fifth overall at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational with an 8K time of 26:40. He finished in the team's top five at every race he competed at this season, including second at regionals.
Landon Brown:
Brown was one of the most improved runners this season, posting an 8K time at MACs that was over two minutes faster than his first 8K of the season at the Mel Brodt. At the conference meet, he recorded the biggest time improvement on the team, racing over a minute faster than his previous personal record. Brown finished as the team's sixth man at MACs and jumped to fourth place at the regional race.
Travis Jex:
The Bowling Green native proved to be one of the Falcons' most consistent runners this season. Jex finished second or third on the team in every race after the season opener at Toledo. At the All-Ohio meet, the redshirt freshman ran a personal best 27:09, which broke his old record by nearly 30 seconds. In his first ever 10K at regionals, Jex ran his 5K high school PR time twice. His high school best was 16:44 and at regionals he ran a 33:22.
Nathan Kuck:
At the Toledo Invite season opener, Kuck was BG's first finisher. He placed seventh overall with a personal best time of 16:07 and was the third fastest freshman in the race. At the All-Ohio Championships, Kuck set a personal record of 27:17, finishing fourth on the team. He broke that record by 42 seconds at MAC Championships, running a 26:35 and placing third on the team.
Jeremy Richard:
Richard is the second of two upperclassmen on the Falcon team. The junior saw significant time improvements toward the end of season compared to 2013. His 27:32 at MACs was a 37 second jump from last season. At the following meet, he shattered his 2013 10K regional time by 1:13 and crossed the line in 34:15. Richard will be the only senior on the team next season.
Tyler Spiewak:
Spiewak, one of three true freshmen, competed in all of the 2014 meets aside from regionals. His conference meet time of 27:39 was a 14 second personal best.
Kohl Taberner:
Taberner proved to be one of the fastest freshmen the university has seen in over seven years. At the All-Ohio meet, he finished first on the team, and top 100 in the field of 570, with a time of 26:30.02 in his first 8K with BGSU. Taberner finished 46th at MAC Championships and his 25:53 was a personal record by 37 seconds. The regional meet was his fourth time finishing first on team (107 overall with a 32:20). He placed 27th among all MAC runners in the race. Taberner also ran his high school PR time twice in the regional 10K race.
Nick Voth:
In his first collegiate race, Voth's 5K time of 16:26 was a 20 second PR and he placed third on the team. He was the team's second finisher at the Mel Brodt Invite, which was also his first 8K race with the Falcons. Voth was in BG's top seven every race this season. He was one of two runners to compete in all six meets.
