Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA has announced that 1,049 Division I athletics teams, including the Bowling Green State University women's golf program, have been publicly recognized for their high marks academically. Teams are recognized for scoring in the top 10 percent of Division I programs for their sport in the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
"Each year, more and more teams are achieving perfect APR scores," said NCAA president Mark Emmert. "We are proud of our member schools' commitment to providing tremendous opportunities for student-athletes so they can succeed on the field, in the classroom, and in life."
The women's golf team was one of three BGSU programs recognized by the NCAA, joining both women's tennis and men's cross country. The three times are the most Falcon programs to receive public recognition in the same year at BGSU since volleyball, women's tennis and women's golf were recognized for the 2006-07 year.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
"I am so proud of our student-athletes and the way they continue to uphold such a rich academic tradition for BGSU Women's Golf," commented head coach Stephanie Young.
It marks the fifth time that the BGSU Women's Golf team has been honored with public recognition in the nine -year existence of the program. The Falcons women's golf program was also honored in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2011-12 and now 2012-13. This year's team has a perfect 1000 APR score both in multiyear and single-season rate.
This season, the Falcons finished the year with four top-five team finishes, highlighted by a team win at the Cleveland State Invitational and a second-place finish at the Rocker Classic, and turned in a team-low round of 288 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate to tie the school record for the lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU women's golf history.
The 2013-14 squad also posted a new school record for the lowest single season stroke average with a 311.22 team stroke average on the year topping last year's mark of 311.26.
BGSU's round of 306 on day two of the 2014 MAC Women's Golf Championships marked the lowest team score over 18-holes of play for the Falcons in its MAC Championships history. The previous low round for a BGSU squad was a 307 back in 2003. The Falcons also carded a 312 in 2013 and a 315 in 2006.
Off the golf course, the BGSU women's golf team was rewarded for their work in the classroom, as Coach Young's team received the female highest GPA Team Award at the annual Bowling Green State University Athletics Honors Night back in April.
