Paige O'Connor records nine kills with a .308 attack percentage
Rochester, Mich. – Paige O'Connor had nine kills and hit .308 but the Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost to Oakland 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 Friday night at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
Bowling Green hit just .070 and posted just 25 kills, slightly more than half of Oakland's 48 for the match. The Falcons held a slight 34-33 edge on digs and 7.0-6.0 advantage in blocks.
BGSU had opportunities in all three sets but Oakland pulled away late each time to come away with the sweep.
"We are disappointed with our performance today," BGSU Head Coach Danijela Tomic said. "Oakland played well but we underperformed in all aspects of the game except for serving. We have two more tough matches tomorrow and two more chances to redeem ourselves. The priority is to improve our serve receive and defense, which will be the key to our success tomorrow."
In the first set, the Falcons used a 6-2 run to tie the score at 18-18. An O'Connor kill kept it tied at 20-20, but Oakland scored five of the final seven points of the frame, picking up three kills and an ace along the way, to take control of the match.
The Falcons were again behind 16-12 in the second set, but scored four straight to tie the frame. At 19-19, Oakland pushed ahead with a four-point run and held on for the 25-20 victory.
In the final set, Oakland led by as many as six points at 16-10 but again Bowling Green rallied. The Falcons got three kills from O'Connor during a 5-0 spurt that brought the team within one. Although BGSU was never able to tie the score, the Falcons stayed just one down after a Nicole Slimko kill made it 21-20. But Oakland scored four of the final five points, posting three kills during the run, to earn the match victory.
Along with O'Connor's nine kills, Slimko added six. Erica Fullenkamp handed out 20 assists and Madeline Garda had a team-high eight digs. Both Desi Klaer and Alyssa Maloney ended with four blocks.
With the win, Oakland improved to 7-5 and Bowling Green fell to 2-8. The Falcons will play two more matches Saturday at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational, facing UC Irvine at 10 am and Robert Morris at 5 pm.
