Daufuskie Island, S.C. – Bowling Green State University wrapped up its first round of play at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Sunday with a team score of 310, +22, at the par 72, 7,380-yards, Jones Signature Course at the Haig Point Golf Club in Daufuskie Island, South Carolina.
The Falcons' team score of 310, +22, puts BGSU in 10th-place in the team standings out of the 11 team field through the first day of play.
"Overall we didn't play as good as we would have liked or are even capable of today, but with that said there are two more days and 36 holes left in this tournament. We had some birdies from our guys today and just need to be more consistent for the entire round," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We will regroup and rest, and come out tomorrow morning with a sense of urgency and consistency for the second round."
In only his second collegiate event, freshman Cameron Michalak led the Falcons on day one with a first round 76, +4. Michalak, who carded two birdies on the day, finished the tie in a tie for 29th-place overall.
Sophomore Jose Narro followed with a first round 77, +5, on Sunday, good enough to place him in a tie for 36th overall, while senior Joe Cooper posted a 78, +6, over his first 18 holes of play, placing him in a tie for 40th overall.
Just one shot behind Cooper is fellow teammate Brett Rinker, as the sophomore totaled a team-best three birdies on day one on his way to a first round score of 79, +7. Rinker is in a tie for 44th overall after 18 holes of play.
Freshman Mitchell Kontak struggled on the back nine on day one, as the newcomer recorded a first round 88, +16, to finish the day in 63rd-place overall.
Co-host Kennesaw State leads the field with a first round team score of 285, -3 under par, while East Carolina (286, -2) and Charleston Southern (293, +5) are in second and third-place, respectively.
Round two of the three round event is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. double tee start tomorrow morning on holes number 1 and 10.
