Sophomore striker wins league award for second time in three weeks
Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Pat Flynn has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Sept. 22). Flynn earns the honor for the second time this season and the second time in his BGSU career.
The Falcons have had the league's P-O-W award winner in three of the season's first four weeks. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Nick Landsberger earned the honor on Sept. 1, while Flynn was named MAC Player of the Week seven days later (Sept. 8).
The award is Flynn's second honor of the day, as he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday morning.
Flynn, the nation's leading scorer, continued his tremendous start to the season, scoring three goals – including both game-winners – in a pair of Falcon victories last week. Flynn scored the lone goal of the match as the Falcons knocked off Michigan, 1-0, in Ann Arbor Tuesday night (Sept. 16). Then, on Friday evening (Sept. 19), Flynn scored two goals, including a header with just over 11 minutes left that broke a 1-1 tie against Eastern Illinois. The Naperville, Ill., native (Central H.S.) added an insurance goal in the late stages of the match to give the Brown and Orange a 3-1 win.
On the year, Flynn now has 12 goals and 26 points. No BG player had scored 12 goals in a season since the 1996 season, and no Falcon had totaled 26 points since '99. Flynn now has five game-winning goals on the year.
The sophomore has scored a goal in six of this season's seven matches, and has scored two or more goals on three occasions.
The Falcons are 6-1-0 this season, and are off to the program's best start since 1995. BGSU received votes in this week's College Soccer News poll, which also was released on Monday morning. The Falcons host nationally-ranked Michigan State University (13th in the CSN poll) on Wednesday evening (Sept. 24) at Cochrane Field. The match begins at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
