2014 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational Day One Results
Huntington, West Virginia – Bowling Green State University sophomore men's golfer Jose Narro posted back-to-back subpar rounds on Monday to lead both the Falcons and the entire tournament field with a 36-hole low score of 135, -7 under par, at the 45th annual Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
Playing at the par-71, 6,573-yards Guyan Golf and Country Club, the Falcons posted team scores of 300 and 282 to finish day one in seventh-place overall with a 36-hole combined team score of 582, +14. BGSU is only two strokes out of fifth-place and just nine shots out of the top-three spots on the team leaderboard.
"The seniors (Joe Cooper and Ryan Triller) came back with two nice rounds in the afternoon and played the way they are capable of playing, while Cameron (Michalak) had a couple double bogeys early, which is expected of a freshman in his first collegiate tournament, but regrouped in the second round and played the way he has all summer," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "Mitchell (Kontak) played well for his first intercollegiate event. Brett (Rinker) had a bit of an off day and couldn't get anything going, while Jose (Narro) was incredible. He had a game plan and he stuck to it, making the shots he wanted to make."
In his first tournament in the state of West Virginia since winning the inaugural Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational last April, Narro felt right at home once more in Huntington, West Virginia on Monday as the sophomore carded rounds of 69, -2 under par, and 66, -5 under par, to finish day one atop of the leaderboard with a combined score of 135, -7 under par. His second round 66 is a new career low as a Falcon.
Narro will take a three stroke lead into the final round of play on Tuesday.
Fellow sophomore Brett Rinker was consistent throughout his 36 holes on day one, as the 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year posted back-to-back rounds of 74, +3, to finish his first two rounds of play in a tie for 42nd-place overall with his combined score of 148, +6.
Both senior Joe Cooper and freshman Cameron Michalak recorded a 71, even par, over round two in the afternoon session, improving by a number of strokes from the first round of play in the morning. Cooper carded rounds of 78, +7, and 71, even par, for a combined score of 149, +7, to sit in a tie for 51st-place, while Michalak, in his first intercollegiate event, shot a 79, +7, and a 71, even par, to finish day one in a tie for 56th with his two-round score of 150, +8.
Falcon senior Ryan Triller rounded out the BGSU lineup, as he turned in rounds of 79, +8, and 74, +3, to put himself in a tie for 76th with a score of 153, +11, after two rounds of play.
Playing as an individual, freshman Mitchell Kontak carded rounds of 75, +4, and 79, +8, in his first intercollegiate tournament, to finish day one in a tie for 81st-place overall with a combined score of 154, +12.
"If we come out and play the way we are capable of playing from top to bottom tomorrow will could make a move up into the top-five of the team standings by the end of the day," continued Farrell.
Youngstown State leads after the first two rounds of play with a team score of 565, -3 under par, while Cincinnati (570, +2) and Cleveland State (573, +5) round out the top three teams.
