Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green men's golf team and head coach Kevin Farrell will open up its 2014 fall season on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 8-9, at the 45th annual Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational hosted by Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.
The 2014 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational will consist of 54 holes of play with 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday at the par-71, 6,573-yards Guyan Golf and Country Club. The two-day event will start with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday and an 8:00 a.m. start off two tees on Tuesday morning.
This year's tournament field will consist of 15 teams in Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Longwood, host Marshall, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Radford, Samford, William & Mary, Wright State, and Youngstown State, as well as individuals from Wake Forest and some of the previously mentioned participating schools.
Coach Farrell will have a mix of both youth and experience in BGSU's opening tournament lineup in 2014, as the third year BGSU head coach will start two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman. Another freshman will also play as an individual at the fall event.
Sophomores Jose Narro and Brett Rinker will take the top two positions for the Falcons next week, as both had outstanding freshmen seasons in 2013-14.
Narro, who played at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship event in Atlanta, Ga. this summer, turned in a stroke average of 73.87 over 31 rounds of play as a true freshman last season. Tabbed the MAC Men's Golfer of the Week on April 17, Narro carded a low round 67 at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational. He also posted a round of 68 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational and a round of 69 at both the Greenbrier Collegiate Invite and at the John Piper Intercollegiate last year, his first as a Falcon. Narro recorded three top-10 finishes and six top-25 showings on the season, while also shooting six sub-par rounds of play on the year. Last year at the 2013 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational event in his intercollegiate debut, Narro recorded a score of 217 (74-72-71) to finish in 21st-place overall. He picked up his first-ever intercollegiate win with a first-place finish at the inaugural Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational with a sub-par 54-hole score of 206 (70-67-69) in the 2014 spring season.
Rinker is coming off a freshman season in 2013-14 in which he was tabbed the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Freshman of the Year, earned 2013-14 All-MAC Second-Team selection honors, and was named to the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Championships All-Tournament Team. Rinker, who was also the recipient of the 2013-14 Frank Fuhrer III Collegiate Player of the Year Award by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association (WPGA), recorded a team-best stroke average of 73.26 on the season for the Falcons. He posted six top-15 finishes on the year, turned in six sub-par rounds of golf on the season and carded a low round 67 at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Collegiate. He also posted a round of 68 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational and shot a sub-par round of 70 in his first ever intercollegiate round of play at the 2013 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. In his last event of the 2013-14 season as a Falcon, he placed fifth overall at the 2014 MAC Championships with rounds of 73, 69, 77 and 70.
Freshman Cameron Michalak will make his Falcon debut in the season opening event, as the Grove City, Ohio native won the 2014 Columbus District Golf Association Junior Championship this past July. Michalak posted a scoring average of 69.8 over his senior season of high school last year and was named to the First-Team All-State Team in both 2013 and 2012. Tabbed the 2013 Central District Player of the Year, Michalak finished as the 2013 AJGA Indiana Runner-Up and took third-place overall at the 2013 State Championship event.
Balancing out the lineup will be seniors Joe Cooper and Ryan Triller, who will look to lead by experience as the older statesmen in 2014-15.
Cooper, who is entering is fourth year at BGSU, carded a stroke average of 75.80 over 25 rounds of play on the year as a junior in 2013-14. He posted a low round 71 at the 2014 Desert Shootout, at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational and the Rutherford Intercollegiate, and finished in 11th-place overall with a score of 221 (74-76-71) at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational.
Triller, who is in his third year as a Falcon, posted an average of 76.00 over 31 rounds of play on the year last season and recorded a low round 69 at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He also posted a 71 at the John Piper Intercollegiate and registered three top-25 finishes, including placing in a tie at 14th-place overall at the John Piper Intercollegiate with a score of 221 (76-74-71).
Playing as an individual in his first-ever intercollegiate event will be freshman Mitchell Kontak. Kontak, who lettered at nearby Maumee High School, was named the NLL Conference Player of the Year both his junior and senior years. Selected as a two-time First-Team All-Northern Lakes League selection and a two-time First-Team All-District honoree, Kontak was a four-time District Qualifier. He was also a State Qualifier his senior season, the first male golfer to do that in Maumee High School history, and was also a District Medalist as a senior.
