BOWLING GREEN – With opening pitch just a few weeks away, the Bowling Green State University softball program has named their 2015 captains for the upcoming season. Shannon Salsburg, who will enter her ninth season at the helm of the Orange and Brown, has allotted freshman Briana Combs, senior Chloe Giordano and junior Marisa Shook to serve as the Falcons' leaders on the diamond.
"I think the team did a good job of choosing captains for the upcoming year," coach Salsburg said. "Each person in the leadership group has shown the ability to put the team first, and they all possess key qualities needed to help lead a group of 24 individuals."
Combs, a right-handed pitcher from Northville, Michigan, will enter her first season with the Orange and Brown. Combs played four years for Ladywood High School and was named 2012 Miss Softball and Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year. She also earned second team All-American, All-League, All-District, All-Region and first team All-State in 2012. Combs will come to the campus of Bowling Green after playing one season at the University of Evansville. The daughter of Scott and Pauline Combs, Briana will plan to study sport management at BGSU.
Giordano, who hails from White Plains, New York, enters her final season as one of the three Falcon captains. In 2014, Giordano, started in 24 games for the Orange and Brown, splitting time between first base, second base, and designated player. She recorded nine hits in 62 at-bats for a .145 batting average. Giordano also played a big role in driving in runs, totaling six RBI in 28 games played – which ranked seventh on the team in 2014. Giordano also ranked third on the Falcons with 115 putouts, while adding 12 assists for a .955 fielding percentage.
Shook, a right-handed outfielder from Maumee, Ohio, appeared in 34 games for the Falcons in 2014. Shook earned 18 starts in the outfield, collecting 10 hits in 66 at-bats. Shook accumulated three extra-base hits, totaled 13 RBI and four runs throughout the 2014 season. Shook recorded her best game in 2014 against Wright State in front of the Falcon faithful at Meserve Field on April 2, recording a double, one run scored and an RBI in the Falcons win over the Raiders. Shook will look to continue to be a leader on and off the field for coach Salsburg.
The Falcons open the season on February 7 when they travel to Cleveland State University to play in the Viking Indoor Tournament. Be sure to follow @BGSUSoftball on Twitter for up-to-the-minute information and coverage during the 2015 softball season.
