Falcons face Michigan Wednesday before beginning eight-game homestand
ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio University scored seven runs over the final two innings, breaking a close game open en route to a 9-1 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Sunday (April 12) afternoon at Ohio Softball Field.
Shelby Westler led the Bobcats (28-15, 11-7 Mid-American Conference) at the plate, with three hits and five runs batted in, while Skipp Miller threw a complete-game three-hitter.
Addie Martin reached base twice and scored the lone run for the Falcons (17-22, 5-13 MAC), while Taylor Behrendt had an RBI double.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Two Falcons, Addie Martin and Cameron Kaufman, were hit by Skipp Miller pitches in Sunday's game. BGSU batters have reached base via HBP a total of 44  times this season to date, shattering the old school record of 35 (2018).
BGSU-OHIO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Each team had at least one baserunner in the first inning. For the Falcons, Hannah Simko drew a two-out walk. The Bobcats saw Brenna Farmer reach on a two-out infield error, with Shelby Westler's single putting runners at the corners. But, each pitcher – Ohio's Skipp Miller and BG's Madison Wendel – got an inning-ending ground ball to keep the game scoreless.
• BG struck quickly in the second. Addie Martin hit the second pitch she saw up the middle for a leadoff single, and three pitches later, Martin came all the way around to score on Taylor Behrendt's double to the gap in left-center.
• But, the 'Cats had a quick response, as Sydney Young led off the bottom of the inning with a homer. Kylie Gorsuch followed with a single, but it took Wendel just two pitches to get three outs, on a pair of ground balls. BG turned a double play on a Rylee McDaniel grounder, before Alexis Book grounded out to Hannah Hunt at second.
• BG loaded the bases in the third, as Peyton Steffes singled, Hunt walked and Martin was hit by a pitch. But, Behrendt's two-out liner was hit directly at Miller.
• For the Falcons, the leadoff batter reached base for the third-straight inning when Cameron Kaufman was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth. She stole second later in the half-inning, but was stranded there.
• Ohio took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Izzie Wilson led off with a single and continued to second on an error, before scoring on a base hit by Young. After a fielder's choice produced the first out, Wendel got McDaniel to hit into a double play for the second time in as many at-bats.
• The Bobcats extended the lead in the fifth. Book and Belle Hummel each singled, and after a fielder's choice resulted in an out at third, Farmer walked to load the bases. Westler followed with a double that cleared the bases and gave the hosts a 5-1 lead.
• Wilson greeted reliever Morgan Beckham with a single, and Young worked a walk to loaded the bases with still just one out. But, Beckham got Kylie Gorsuch to hit a popup to shallow center, with the runners forced to hold, and a ground ball by McDaniel resulted in a force play at third.
• But, the Bobcats walked it off in the sixth. Book was hit by a pitch, and Hummel plated her with a double. Then, Colleen Bare followed with an RBI single, and two batters later, Westler homered to give the 'Cats an eight-run lead.
• Ohio had 13 hits in the game, including a double and a homer off the bat of Westler. She went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs.
