Both Flynn and Sullivan earn the district honor for the second consecutive year. Their names now will be placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot.
Flynn and Sullivan are two of only three players from the Mid-American Conference named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team in 2015.
Flynn and Sullivan, both of whom hail from Naperville, Ill., have been key contributors to BGSU's offense again this season, having combined for 15 of the Falcons' 26 goals this fall. Last year, the duo combined to score 19 of the Falcons' 38 goals.
Flynn, an accounting major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.79. Sullivan, a business administration major, has a 3.89Â cumulative GPA at BGSU.
Flynn, after leading the Falcons in scoring last season, paces the team again this fall. He has BG-best totals of nine goals and 22 points on the year. Flynn has three multiple-goal games this season, with a hat trick in a win over Western Illinois and back-to-back two-goal games vs. Cleveland State and Evansville. Last fall, in his first season with the Falcons, Flynn earned a veritable plethora of honors, both in the classroom and on the pitch. He was one of the top scorers in the MAC and the nation with 14 goals and 32 points a year ago, and his awards included Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections. Flynn has career totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 36 games at BGSU, and he is just one goal and five points away from moving into the top 10 on each of those school career lists. Flynn has eight career game-winning goals at BG.
Sullivan is second on the Falcons in goals and points, and he is tied for the team assists lead this year. He has 17 points on six goals and five assists to date. Sullivan has had a pair of four-point games this fall, with a goal and two assists vs. WIU and a pair of goals in the IPFW match. He scored the game-winning goal in each of those contests, and leads the Brown and Orange with three winners this fall. Last season, Sullivan had 16 points to finish third on the team and among the top-10 in the MAC in scoring. In his BGSU career, Sullivan has 39 points on 13 goals and 13 assists. Seven of his 13 goals have been game winners.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
As mentioned, Flynn, Sullivan and the other First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in November. After earning Academic All-District honors a year ago, Flynn went on to be named to the 2014 Academic All-America® Second Team.
The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols, 8-7-1 on the year, are on the road for the final three matches of the regular season, beginning with Friday night's (Oct. 30) MACÂ matchup with Buffalo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at UB Stadium. BGSU's remaining regular-season schedule also includes games at Appalachian State (Nov. 3) and nationally-ranked Akron (Nov. 7). The top-four teams in the final MAC standings will qualify for the MAC Tournament, which begins on Friday evening, Nov. 13.
