Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will return to competition this week at the Cleveland State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6, at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio.
The two-day tournament at the par 72, 7,138-yards Barrington Golf Club will consist of a total of 54 holes with 36 holes set for Monday, Oct. 5, and the final 18 holes of play slated for Tuesday, Oct. 6. Both days are scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
This year's tournament field includes Cleveland State, Appalachian State, Bowling Green, Dayton, Detroit, IPFW, Kent State, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Robert Morris, St. Francis (Pa.), Wright State and Youngstown State.
"We are entering play this week with the mindset to win this event," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "We don't want to just contend, we want to win. Across the board we are playing really well right now and we expect to continue that this week at Barrington."
The top three spots in the lineup will be the same for the Falcons as in their previous two events thus far this fall season in Jose Narro, Pablo Heredia Iglesias and Brett Rinker, while sophomore Mitchell Kontak moves up to the No. 4 spot and freshman Trey Walker makes his first appearance in the BGSU lineup at the No. 5 position.
Narro leads the Falcons with a stroke average of 69.17 overall, which is tied for the second lowest stoke average in the nation thus far this year. With four sub-par rounds of golf over just six total rounds of play, the junior has posted two top-10 finishes thus far this season with a third-place showing at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and a sixth-place showing at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate last time out.
Iglesias has posted back-to-back 49th-place finishes over his first two events as a Falcon so far this year and is coming off a 54-hole score of 227, +11, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate a little over a week ago. The freshman, who has carded a low round 71 thus far this fall, enters play this week with a stroke average of 74.00 over six rounds of play.
Rinker has been consistent all season long, as the sophomore has carded 54-hole scores of 213, even par, and 217, +1, at BGSU's two fall events. The sophomore, who has two top-25 place finishes this year, has carded rounds of 69 and 70, and has turned in a round of 72 three different times. He is second on the team with a stroke average of 71.67 on the year.
Like the previously mentioned Falcons, Kontak will be teeing-off in his third tournament this fall season for BGSU having turned in 54-hole scores of 210, -3 under par, and 249, +33, at the Marshall Invitational and the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate over the month of September. The sophomore shot a career-low round 68 over the third round of play at the Marshall Invitational and has recorded a stroke average of 76.50 over six rounds of play in the fall of 2015.
Walker will be making both his Falcon and intercollegiate debut at the Cleveland State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The Bowling Green, Ohio native was a two-time State Qualifier as an individual in both 2014 and 2013 while at Bowling Green High School. A two-time First-Team All-League selection and a two-time First-Team All-District honoree, Walker posted wins at both the City of Toledo Junior Golf Championship and the Ohio Big I Junior Golf Qualifier in the summer of 2014.
