Men’s Golf in Fourth After 36 Holes of Play at the CSU Invitational

Aurora, Ohio – Two Falcons posted sub-par 18-hole rounds on Monday, as the Bowling Green State University men's golf team carded team scores of 289 and 296 to conclude day one in fourth-place overall with a team score of 585, +9, after 36 holes of play at the Cleveland State Invitational held at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio.
The Falcons are 14 strokes behind the 36-hole tournament leader and just eight strokes behind the both the Oakland Grizzlies and the Dayton Flyers who are tied for second-place overall at 577, +1.
BGSU is ahead of Appalachian State (589), host Cleveland State (589), Wright State (591), Youngstown State (595), Northern Kentucky (600), IPFW (603), Detroit (604), Robert Morris (609) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (631) in the 13 team field.
"We were right there after the first round of play. We played the way we are capable of playing and put ourselves in great position," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "However, we didn't finish out the day and it cost us. It is very disappointing. Tomorrow we need to make birdies, but we also need to play with heart."
Freshman Pablo Heredia Iglesias will enter the final day of play in a tie for sixth-place overall with his 36-hole score of 142, -2 under par, on Monday. Iglesias carded rounds of 72, even par, and 70, -2 under par, on day one of play. The Spaniard recorded 11 birdies and 17 pars over his first 36 holes of play.
Also ending day one in the top-20 was junior Brett Rinker who finished in a tie for 18th-place overall with rounds of 74, +2, and 73, +1, for a combined two-round score of 147, +3. Rinker was consistent all day long, as he posted three birdies and 28 pars overall.
Both Jose Narro and Mitchell Kontak had strong first rounds of play on Monday morning, as Narro shot an even par, 72, while Kontak fired off an opening round 71, -1 under par. However, the two Falcons struggled over the second round of play. Narro posted a second round 78, +6, to end day one in a tie for 35th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 150, +6, while Kontak turned a score of 83, +11, in the afternoon session to place in a tie for 52nd with his two-round combined score of 154, +10.
Freshman Trey Walker dropped five strokes off his first round 80, +8, with a second round 75, +3, to end day one of play in a tie for 57th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 155, +11.
Kent State leads the tournament field with a team score of 571, -5 under par, while Dayton is in second-place after day one of play with a score of 576, even par.
The third and final round of play is set for tomorrow morning at the Barrington Golf Club.
