Toledo, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon, as the Falcons allowed two second-half goals to cross-town rival Toledo on the road at Scott Park.
In the 2-0 loss, redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Cadel recorded 12 saves, her second double-digit save performance of the season. She is now tied with Ali Shingler for third all-time on BGSU's career saves list with 334.
Â
The Rockets scored in the 53rd and 56th minutes to beat the Falcons for an eighth straight time. The first Toledo goal came when Sophie Pohl shot from the far left side of the box and snuck the ball past Cadel into the right corner of the net.
Â
UT found the back of the net again three minutes later when Erica Hubert's pass was intercepted by Regan Price who then put a shot past Cadel to go up 2-0.
Â
"Overall I am disappointed with our effort over 90 minutes," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "I don't think as a collective group we showed up to compete today and that showed. Lauren kept us in the game, as always. We have to do a better job through the middle of the park denying shots. The saves she's making and then not to reciprocate elsewhere on the field and in our competitiveness is just unfair. That needs to get better as we move through the rest of the season."
Â
The Falcons fall to 6-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the MAC, after winning two in a row last weekend against Akron and Buffalo. With the win, Toledo improves to 5-9-0 and 1-4-0 in the conference.
Â
Both teams looked to score early, as BGSU brought the pressure first, but a corner kick in the opening minute of the match sailed out of bounds before a Falcon player could make contact. Toledo got the first shot of the game, but Cadel recorded her first save of the contest off a UT header attempt in the fourth minute.
Â
In the 18th minute, the Rockets' Pohl threatened to score, but a leaping Cadel was able to block it out of the BGSU goal mouth. Five minutes later, Toledo's Brooke Maletic broke away from the Falcon backline, but a charging Cadel came out of the box to make the save.
Â
Haley Parkinson fired a shot in the 31st minute that hit the crossbar, nearly missing an opportunity to put BGSU up by one. The Falcons and Rockets were evenly matched for the remainder of the first half.
Â
Cadel recorded five saves in the opening 45-minute period.
Â
BGSU came out of halftime with energized, as Skylar Fleak put a head on Rachel Winters' corner kick in the 47th minute, but her attempt was saved by UT goalkeeper Katie Wilson.
Â
Pressure from the UT attack continued in the second half, as the Rockets opened the half with four straight shots, the latter of them resulting in a goal for Toledo. Cadel was able to halt the other three for her sixth, seventh and eighth saves of the game.
Â
The Falcons remained determined with Fleak creating another scoring opportunity for BGSU, but her shot attempt grazed the top of the crossbar in the 54th minute.
Â
Two minutes later, the Rockets scored their second goal of the game.
Â
Cadel and the Falcon backline continued to feel the pressure from the Toledo offense throughout the second half. The redshirt junior made a leaping save in the 63rd minute to keep the score 2-0, and in the 77th minute, she recorded back-to-back saves off a UT free kick. Cadel punched the initial shot out of goal, but the Rockets fired another shot off the rebound and she knocked the attempt out of bounds.
Â
The Falcons were outshot 25-10 on the day, while the Rockets also held the advantage in corner kicks (7-2).
Parkinson led the team with four shots, followed by Fleak with two and Juli Knapp, Madison Schupbach, Hubert and Morgan Abbitt with one each.
Â
"This one needs to sit on us a little bit because if we are not all willing to show up and compete, this is what the MAC looks like. So we're going to sit on this one for another couple hours and then get back to business tomorrow and find a way to get some points up at Central Michigan," added Basalyga.
