Griffin, Pohlkamp Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
November 23, 2015 | General, Ice Hockey, Swimming & Diving
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Matt Pohlkamp and swimmer Victoria Griffin.
Male Athlete of the Week
Matt Pohlkamp, a junior from Baxter, Minn., had a hand in all four goals Saturday as the Bowling Green hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Alabama Huntsville. Pohlkamp had two goals and two assists for a career-best four points in the 4-3 victory. After a scoreless first period, Pohlkamp gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with power play goal midway through the second. UAH tied the contest less than two minutes later but Pohlkamp's second goal, coming just 3:26 into the third, gave the Falcons the lead for good. He then assisted on Brent Tate's goal five minutes later and added the primary assist on Pierre-Luc Mercier's empty netter with 26 seconds remaining in the contest. Pohlkamp posted a +2 on-ice rating for the evening and finished the weekend with the same +2 rating and five shots on goal.
Female Athlete of the Week
Victoria Griffin, a junior from Littlestown, Pa., helped the Bowling Green swimming and diving program to a second-place finish against the difficult field at the Pittsburgh Invitational. Griffin was a part of three victories during the invitational – finishing first in the 100 free, 200 free and 800 free relay events. Griffin's winning time of 49.89 in the 100 free was the third-best swim in school history for the event – just .06 seconds off the school record. In her 200 free victory – winning in a time of 1:48.99 – Griffin was .28 seconds off the school record, also good for the third-best swim in school history. Despite a third-place finish in the 50 free (23.21), Griffin's swim in that event was still tied for the sixth-best in school history. On top of her individual success, Griffin was part of four relays which finished in second place over the weekend, as well.
