November 24, 2015 | Men's Soccer
BGSU juniors earn first- and second-team honors, respectively; Falcons have two Academic All-Americans for the first time in program history
Bowling Green State University juniors Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan have been named to the 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Team, it was announced Tuesday (Nov. 24). Flynn was named to the first team, while Sullivan earned second-team honors.
Flynn is an Academic All-American for the second-straight year, having been named to the second team in 2014. BGSU has now had four honorees in the last three years. Brandon Silva was named to the second team in 2013.
Flynn is just the second BGSU men's soccer student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American on two occasions. He joins Joe Burch on that list.

Flynn is one of just three juniors named to the first team, and Flynn and Sullivan are two of three Mid-American Conference student-athletes honored by CoSIDA. West Virginia's Jack Elliott joins Sullivan on the second team.
Additionally, Flynn is only the fourth student-athlete in BGSU men's soccer history to earn Academic All-America® First-Team honors. And, the 2015 season marks the first time in program history that the Falcons have had two Academic All-Americans in the same season.
Both Flynn and Sullivan are natives of Naperville, Ill. Flynn, an accounting major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.79. Sullivan, a business administration major, maintains a 3.89 cumulative GPA at BGSU.
Flynn has led the Falcons in scoring in each of his two seasons with the program. He had BG-best totals of nine goals and 22 points in 2015, despite missing the final four games due to injury. He had three multiple-goal games for the second consecutive year, with a hat trick and a pair of two-goal outings. Those two-goal matches came in back-to-back wins over Cleveland State and Evansville, and he added an assist in each win. Flynn had four assists on the year. He had totals of 14 goals and 32 points last fall, leading the team and ranking among the national leaders in both categories. After just two seasons with the Falcons, Flynn has career totals of 23 goals and 54 points. He is only one goal and five points from moving into the top 10 on those respective BGSU career lists.
Sullivan started all 19 matches in 2015, and had 17 points on six goals and five assists. He tied for the team lead in assists and was second on the Falcons in both goals and points. Sullivan recorded a pair of four-point games in 2015, with a goal and two assists vs. WIU and a pair of goals in the IPFW match. He scored the game-winning goal in each of those contests, and led the Brown and Orange with three winners this fall. Sullivan also paced the team with 61 shot attempts and 28 shots on goal. Last season, Sullivan had 16 points to finish third on the team and among the top-10 in the MAC in scoring. In his BGSU career, Sullivan has 39 points on 13 goals and 13 assists. Seven of his 13 goals have been game winners.
Previous men's soccer Academic All-America® Team selections by CoSIDA include Greg Murphy (1991), Joe Burch (1995 - Third Team and 1996 - First Team), Ty Fowler (1999 - First Team), Jacob Lawrence (2009 - First Team), Silva (2013 - Second Team) and Flynn (2014 - Second Team). Murphy, Burch and Fowler earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® Fall/Winter At-Large Team honors, as men's soccer did not have its own separate team selected at that time.
Late last month (Oct. 29), Flynn and Sullivan each were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First-Team honors, making them eligible for consideration to the Academic All-America® Team. Both Flynn and Sullivan earned the all-district accolades for the second consecutive year.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Flynn, Sullivan and the Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 9-9-1. Over the last two seasons, BGSU has gone 23-15-2. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons had just three seniors on the 26-man roster in 2015.
