Kermit Stroh Honored As Champion Of Life At GoDaddy Bowl
December 22, 2015 | Falcon Club
Mobile, Ala. – Kermit Stroh, who earned an honorary doctorate from Bowling Green State University in 2002 and was named a BGSU honorary alumnus in 2003, was honored with a Champion of Life award at the Mayor's Luncheon Tuesday prior to the GoDaddy Bowl. Bowling Green, at 10-3 on the season, will play Georgia Southern in the GoDaddy Bowl Wednesday at 8 pm ET on ESPN.
Stroh was one of eight Champion of Life honorees Tuesday along with Acie Campbell, Joseph P. Hand Jr., Randy Patrick, Adrian Peterson, Lee Shirvanian, Siran Stacy and Dr. Samuel Strada. Legendary sportscaster Brent Musburger was the keynote speaker for the event.
Honorees of the Champion of Life award have achieved great success in their chosen field through dedication and hard work. They have overcome the many obstacles that have stood in the path of success and have given a great deal back to the community and country.
"I'm very honored and humbled to have this experience," Stroh said. "I'm very appreciative to Bowling Green for giving me the opportunity to do the many things that I've done."
Stroh helped to co-found Moulton Gas Service Inc., with his father Elmer Stroh. It was Stroh's commitment to expanding the company that brought him to the BGSU campus in the early 1960's. As a way to gain radio advertising for his propane gas company, he provided color commentary at regional basketball games for WERM-AM, a Wapakoneta-based radio station. For his radio hook, he was known as "Kerm on the WERM."
In his community, Stroh has been involved with many civic organizations including the Ohio Gas Propane Association, Rotary Club, Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Committee, and the Auglaize County Regional Planning Commission.
Stroh was appointed to the BGSU Board of Trustees from 1993 to 2002, and served two years as board chair from 1999-01. He also served as chair of the academic and student affairs committee and co-chaired the University's first capital campaign from 2008-11. He is a member of the BGSU Falcon Club, the Presidents Club, and a supporter of the Coaches Corner. He was also recognized with the Doyt Perry Award.
In 2008, he and his family announced an $8 million gift to the University to support the construction of the new convocation center, now known as the Stroh Center, as well as funds for intercollegiate athletics and the Kerm and Mary Lu Stroh Scholarship Fund for students from five different counties in Ohio.
Stroh also provided a scouting report for Wednesday's bowl game.
"The triple option scares me," Stroh said. "We haven't played it at all. I have great faith in (interim coach) Brian Ward. He's a great defensive coach. I think we can play with anyone if we can defend the triple option."
J. Robert (Bob) Sebo earned the Champion of Life honor in 2004 and Michael Wilcox was awarded the honor in 2008 when Bowling Green also competed in the bowl game.
