Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will face a challenging schedule this spring season, but will attempt to carry over their momentum from a strong fall season that concluded with a sixth-place team finish at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in November 2014.
"We have been really working hard in the weight room this winter and the guys are visibly stronger. We have also been practicing a lot of short game in the Falcon Golf Training Center and running a lot of short game competitions during sessions," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We are fortunate that we will get to go to the first tournament a little early and play four practice rounds before the SDSU event. Hopefully that should help to get some rust off, but just about all of the guys were somewhere warm over winter break competing and practicing. Hopefully we can build off our strong finish in November."
Leading the Falcons heading into the spring season is sophomore Jose Narro, who recently finished in a four-way tie for 27th-place overall with rounds of 69, 78, 75 and 71 for a combined 72-hole score of 293, +5, at the inaugural 2015 Latin America Amateur Championship this January.
Narro not only led the Falcons over the 2014 fall season with a stroke average of 73.17, but the Tampico, Mexico native also led the entire Mid-American Conference as well. He posted a low round of 66 twice over the fall season and also carded four top-25 finishes, including a first-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational with a tournament low score of 206, -7 under par.
Along with Narro, fellow sophomore Brett Rinker will also look to continue his strong play this spring season. Rinker, who posted a stroke average of 74.39 over 18 rounds of play in the fall, turned in a low round 68 over his final round of play in the fall season to finish in a tie for eighth-place at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic and earn MAC Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
Seniors Ryan Triller and Joe Cooper will both attempt to wrap up their collegiate careers on a high note, as Triller had a strong fall season in which he turned in a low round 69 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate and did not post a single score higher than a 79 over 15 rounds of play. Cooper, who had an up and down fall season, began to get back on track as the fall season concluded, posting nine straight rounds in the 70's including a 71 and 72 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate.
The freshmen duo of Cameron Michalak and Mitchell Kontak each played in multiple events in the fall season and will look to make an impact for the Falcons in their first spring season at BGSU. Michalak posted a stroke average of 76.20 over 15 rounds of play this past fall which included a low round of 71 on two separate occasions, while Kontak teed-off for BGSU in three different events, carding a stroke average of 80.67 over nine rounds of golf.
Depth for the Falcons' lineup will come from a number of golfers in junior Holden Pahr, sophomore Eli Stacy, freshman Ethan DeForest and redshirt-senior Devin O'Grady.
The Falcons will tee-off its 2015 spring season on Feb. 9-10 at the Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, California.
