Holliday, Mokienko are recognized for their contributions in S.C. last weekend
Last weekend, the Bowling Green State University softball team competed at the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. On Tuesday evening (Feb. 24), the host school announced the 2015 Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team, and two members of the Falcons were recognized.
Junior Molly Holliday and sophomore Trista Mokienko were named to the team after going a combined 10-for-21 at the plate in the Falcons' four games at the tournament.
Holliday, a native of Vancouver, Wash. (Valencia H.S.), led the Falcons with a .500 batting average in the four games. She had a walk, a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in on the weekend, with a .545 on-base percentage and a .600 slugging pct.
Holliday was 1-for-3 with a run-scoring double in Friday's (Feb. 20) 6-1 win over Winthrop, and she was 2-for-3 with a run scored in both of Saturday's games, vs. Massachusetts and the College of Charleston. The center fielder had a stolen base and an RBI in the UMass contest.
On the season, Holliday is hitting .474 through eight games. She has scored six runs and has an on-base pct. of .500, a slugging pct. of .526 and a pair of stolen bases in 2015 to date.
Mokienko, a native of Franklinville, N.J., (Delsea Regional), hit .455 and led the Falcons with a slugging percentage of 1.000 in the four games. She went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in the win over Winthrop, then had a monster game at the plate in BGSU's narrow loss to UMass on Saturday morning.
In that UMass contest, Mokienko went 3-for-4 with two homeruns and three RBI. She gave the Falcons an early lead with a solo homer in the top of the first inning, laced a run-scoring single to right center in the third and homered again in the fifth to give BG a 5-4 lead at the time. She added another hit in Saturday's second game, against the host school.
Earlier on Tuesday (Feb. 24), Mokienko was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for her exploits in South Carolina.
On the year, Mokienko is hitting .435, and she leads the Falcons with three homers, 20 total bases and a slugging pct. of .870. Her total of three homers matches her output for all of last season, and her 2015 total of five RBI is just two away from last year's total. With six runs scored and three walks, she is halfway to matching those totals from the 2014 season.
The Falcons' next scheduled tournament, the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic in Bowling Green, Ky., (Feb. 27-March 1), has been cancelled due to a storm that hit the area last week as well as the forecast for more cold and inclement weather. BGSU now will prepare for the USF-Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., the following weekend (March 6-8). The Falcons' scheduled opponents in that tourney include Penn, Seton Hall, Villanova, Maine and SIU-Edwardsville.
