Sowder joins offensive staff while Wittke takes over as Recruiting Coordinator in 2015
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University Head Football Coach Dino Babers has announced the appointment of Mike Lynch and Sean Lewis as Co-Offensive Coordinators for the 2015 season.
In addition, Babers announced the promotion of Andrew Sowder to assistant coach for the 2015 season, while Roy Wittke will move to Recruiting Coordinator. Sowder spent the 2014 season as Director of Player Personnel & Recruiting for the Falcons. He will coach the outside receivers for the Orange and Brown next season. Wittke spent the last three seasons, including the 2014 season at Bowling Green, as Babers' Director of Football Operations.
"We are excited to finalize the coaching staff with the announcement of Mike Lynch and Sean Lewis as Co-Offensive Coordinators," Babers began. "In addition, Andrew Sowder has been promoted to outside receivers coach. Both Mike and Sean have seniority among our offensive coaching staff and Andrew has coached in our system during his time at both Baylor and Eastern Illinois."
With the announcement of Sowder filling the final assistant coaching position, Babers has finalized his on-field coaching staff for the 2015 season:
Kim McCloud – Assistant Head Coach (Wide Receivers)
Brian Ward – Defensive Coordinator (Linebackers)
Sean Lewis – Co-Offensive Coordinator (Quarterbacks)
Mike Lynch – Co-Offensive Coordinator (Offensive Line/Running Backs)
Tom Kaufman – Special Teams Coordinator (Defensive Line)
Nick Monroe – Safeties
Tom Freeman – Offensive Line/Tight Ends
Mike Mickens – Cornerbacks
Andrew Sowder – Outside Wide Receivers
Sowder came to Bowling Green from Eastern Illinois, where he coached for two seasons under Babers. At EIU, Sowder was also responsible for outside receivers.
"It is an honor to coach the outside receivers in this offense and for Bowling Green," Sowder said. "I take a lot of pride in the position and have experience coaching it under Coach Babers. This will be my sixth season working with him, so I am familiar with what his expectations are for our group. I know the players at BGSU very well and they are a great group of young men who I look forward to working with."
During the 2014 season, Sowder was responsible for player personnel and recruiting at Bowling Green, assisting in putting together the Falcons' 21-person class announced on Feb. 5, 2015. Sowder also managed recruiting travel for coaches, scheduled official visits for recruits, and oversaw the player personnel department.
2013 was a banner year for the receiving core at EIU. Sowder coached the outside receivers, as the the Panthers caught 395 passes for 5,213 yards and 55 touchdowns. EIU's receivers averaged 13.2 yards per catch and 372.4 yards per game during the school-record breaking season.
During the 2012 season Sowder helped coach a wide receiver unit that hauled in a previous school record 341 passes for 4,019 yards and 34 touchdowns. The outside group was led by seniors Chris Wright and Chavar Watkins. Wright matched the OVC record for consecutive games with a touchdown reception as he finished in the EIU career top ten in yards, receptions and touchdown catches.
Sowder was a student coach at Baylor, assisting Babers with the wide receivers and special teams in 2009 and 2010 following a playing career with the Bears.
During the 2011 season Sowder worked as the running backs coach at West Texas A&M, with the team posting an 8-3 record including a win over Central Missouri in the Kanza Bowl. He coached running back Khiry Robinson who was the MVP of the Kanza Bowl and is now a member of the New Orleans Saints.
Sowder is very familiar with Babers' #FalconFast offensive system having played at Baylor and then coached under him. He was a tight end at Baylor during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. In August of 2009 he became a student coach assisting Babers with the wide receivers and tight ends. Baylor ended the season with an appearance in the Texas Bowl as the offensive unit ranked 12th in the nation in total offense.
Sowder earned his undergraduate degree from Baylor in 2011 in film/digital media.
