Sophomore standout earns league weekly honor after hitting .579 last week
Bowling Green State University softball standout Aspen Searle has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the East Division. The weekly award winners were announced by the league office on Tuesday (March 17).
BGSU has received at least one MAC weekly award after three of the four weeks in which the team has competed this season to date. Junior Braiden Dillow earned MAC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors on Feb. 10, following the Falcons' season-opening tournament at Cleveland State, and sophomore Trista Mokienko and senior Jamie Kertes earned league Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades two weeks later (Feb. 24), following the team's trip to Charleston, S.C., for the Cougar Classic.
Searle, a native of Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), hit a whopping .579 with a slugging percentage of 1.000 in the Falcons' six games last week. Searle had at least one hit in each of the six games, with four multiple-hit contests in that time. She led off the game by reaching base in each of the last five games, with four hits and a walk.
Searle, a sophomore, was 5-for-7 in the Falcons' two games vs. Indiana, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the first game vs. the Hoosiers, and getting two hits in three at-bats in the second. On Sunday (March 15), Searle was a combined 4-for-7 in a pair of wins. She went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk and four RBI in BG's 12-4, five-inning win over IPFW. Then, against Wright State, she was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in BG's 5-3 victory.
On the week, Searle led the Falcons in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage (.636), runs (seven), hits (11), doubles (two) and homers (two), and she was second on the Falcons in RBI (five).
On the season, Searle is hitting .350 with an OBP of .426 and a slugging pct. of .700. She leads BGSU in runs scored (17), RBI (13), doubles (7) and homers (4), and she is tied for second on the Falcons in stolen bases (6). Searle has four homers this season after hitting three during all of the 2014 season, and has a total of 12 extra-base hits this year after recording nine last year.
Searle, as mentioned, has led off each of the Falcons' last five games by reaching base. Overall this season, Searle is hitting .531 (17-for-32) when leading off an inning.
Searle was named the MAC Player of the Week for the East Division. Akron's Erin Seiler and Kent State's Emma Johnson shared East Division Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, while Jenny Rohn of Western Michigan and Keegan Hayes of Northern Illinois were named the MAC West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The Falcons (7-12) play just one game this week, heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a Wednesday (March 18) contest vs. No. 3 Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Following the U-M game, BGSU is idle until heading to the Glass City to open MAC play against Toledo on Saturday, March 28. BGSU's home opener is slated for April 10, when Miami comes to town for an afternoon doubleheader at Meserve Field.
