BGSU's spring slate includes four home dates
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team will embark upon a challenging spring schedule this weekend. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons' seven spring events include four home dates, as well as a match vs. the Columbus Crew SC of the MLS.
"We are excited about our spring schedule," said Nichols. "We've put together a high-quality slate of opponents this spring, and we look forward to testing ourselves against great competition."
The schedule begins with a pair of road matches against regional Division-I foes. BGSU travels south to face Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon, March 29, before facing Oakland on Friday evening, April 3.
The home slate begins with a three-team event at Cochrane Field. The Falcons welcome Dayton and Tiffin to town, and each of the three teams will play a pair of 70-minute matches. The tripleheader begins will BGSU facing Dayton at 1:00 p.m. and concluded with the Brown and Orange meeting Tiffin at 4:00 p.m. In between, the Flyers will face the Dragons in a 2:30 p.m. match.
The next weekend will see a veritable plethora of former Falcon greats will converge upon Cochrane Field, as the Alumni Match is scheduled for Friday night, April 17. Two days later, the Brown and Orange will face the Crew SC in Columbus.
"The match against the Crew is beneficial for us for several reasons," said Nichols. "It will be a great opportunity for our players to go up against a professional team, and it gives the coaching staff a chance to see how we measure up against a team that will be as talented as any we have ever faced."
BGSU will conclude the spring schedule with home matches against Vaughan SC, a club program from Ontario (Wed., April 22), and Notre Dame College (Sat., April 25) under the lights at Cochrane Field. All of BGSU's home contests are open to the public and free of charge.
The Falcons return eight starters from the fall, when BGSU posted an overall record of 14-6-1 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 2-2-1, good for a tie for third place in the six-team conference. BG's overall win total was the team's highest in 17 years, and the Brown and Orange advanced to the championshp game of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2003. The Falcons lose three seniors – starters Danny Baraldi, Jon Kumher and Vlad Lekarev, from that team.
"We have a big group returning, but we also graduated three integral pieces in Jon, Danny and Vlad," said Nichols. "The spring schedule is a chance for the coaching staff to experiment with different lineups and combinations. And, it is a chance for the returning players, both starters and reserves, to get some valuable game experience as we prepare for what we know will be a challenging fall schedule."
