Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will host the second annual Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational at The Old White TPC on April 13-14 at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Co-hosted by Marshall University, the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational will be a two-day and 54 hole event played on the par 70, 7,287 yards Old White TPC course at "America's Resort". The tournament will consist of two rounds, or 36 holes of play, on Monday, April 13 and will conclude with a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, April 14.
In only its second year of existence, the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational tournament field has nearly doubled in size going from seven teams at last year's inaugural event to a total of 13 teams this year. The 13-team field includes Bowling Green, Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Elon, James Madison, Loyola-Chicago, Middle Tennessee State, Ohio, Old Dominion, Samford, Savannah State and St. Bonaventure.
Representing the Falcons at the two-day event will be Jose Narro, Brett Rinker, Joe Cooper and Ryan Triller. The fifth and final spot in the BGSU lineup will be determined by a qualifying round between Holden Pahr, Cameron Michalak and Mitchell Kontak. All seven players will tee-off at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational on Monday morning.
Narro will look to defend his individual title at this year's event, having posted a first-place individual finish with a score of 206, -4 under par, at the inaugural Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational last spring. The sophomore, who posted rounds of 70, 67 and 69 over his three rounds of play last year, will enter play this week ranked third in the MAC with a stroke average of 73.26 on the season. Narro, who has been the top golfer for the Falcons in two of the three tournaments for BGSU this spring, is coming off a 26th-place finish at the 2015 Aggie Invitational in which he carded rounds of 74, 75 and 77 for a combined 54-hole score of 226, +10.
Rinker will also look to post a second straight top-five finish at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, as the Pennsylvania native finished in a tie for fourth-place overall at last year's event with a 54-hole score of 216, +6. Ranked ninth overall in the MAC with a stroke average of 74.11 on the year, Rinker has been one of the top-two Falcon golfers in seven events for BGSU on the year and has posted three top-30 finishes. This spring, Rinker has tallied seven rounds of a 75 or under, and is looking to build off his 54-hole score of 231, +15, at the highly competitive Aggie Invitational on April 4-5.
Playing perhaps the best golf of his collegiate career, Cooper is coming off rounds of 76, 75 and 75 at the Aggie Invitational. The senior, who has recorded a stroke average of 75.61 on the season to date, finished just outside of the top-10 at last year's Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, turning in an 11th-place showing with rounds of 74, 76 and 71 for a combined three-round score of 221, +11.
After struggling over the first two rounds of play at the Aggie Invitational on April 3, Triller bounced back to shoot a third round 73, +1, to lead the Falcons on the final round of play at the two-day event. Triller, who has shot a season low 69 twice on the year, has carded only two rounds of 80 or higher out of 24 rounds of play his senior season. In fact, this year he has proven to be a strong finisher as he has posted his lowest round of an event on the final day of play in six out of the eight tournaments he has teed-off in for the Falcons this year.
Pahr has competed for the Falcons twice already this spring, most recently turning in a 54-hole score of 255, +39, at the 2015 Aggie Invitational with rounds of 82, 86 and 87. The junior earned a right to play in the Texas A&M event by shooting a round of 79, +8, and posting a sixth-place finish at the BGSU & UT Individual Play event the week prior. At last year's Greenbrier event, Pahr turned in rounds of 74, 74 and 77 to finish in a tie for 22nd-place overall with a 54-hole score of 225, +15.
Both Michalak and Kontak will be making their first appearances at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, as the freshmen both last played a few weeks back in the BGSU & UT Individual Play event with Toledo. Michalak has totaled 22 rounds of play this season over eight events for the Falcons, registering a season-low round of 70 at the Lone Star Invitational in April and a stroke average of 76.73 overall on the year. Kontak has played in four events for BGSU this year, carding a low round 75 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in September and a stroke average of 81.10 on the season.
At the 2014 Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational , Marshall University took home the team championship with a combined team score of 863, +23, to edge BGSU (867, +27) by just four strokes, while Narro earned medalist honors with a tournament low score of 206, -4 under par, to record the individual tournament win.
Start times for both days will be at 9:00 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.
