April 17, 2015 | Swimming & Diving
Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2014-15 Women's Swimming & Diving Academic All-MAC team this afternoon. Bowling Green tied for second with Eastern Michigan with 15 student-athletes being recognized. Miami (OH) was the only team ahead of the Falcons with 17 student-athletes on the All-MAC team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The 15 Falcons named Academic All-MAC include: Hannah Albion (psychology), Anna Babinec (gerontology), Stephanie Boyle (intervention specialist), Jordan Bullock (pre-med), Tara Capouch (physical education), Kayla Effinger (biology), Victoria Griffin (criminal justice), Nicole Hranchook (health science), Hannah Newman (exercise science), Erica Nieminen (international business), Rachel Perry (chemistry), Alexandra Poitinger (tourism, leisure and event planning), Haley Roberts (health science), Maya Skorupski (biology) and Carmen Young (dietetics).
All five of the Orange and Brown seniors were given Academic All-MAC accolades.
"I'm really proud of our women and all the hard work they put into their swimming and academics," said head coach Petra Martin. "The academic All-MAC awards point out that we can be very successful in both aspects of being student-athletes at BGSU."
The honor is the second academic award of the season to be given to the team, as the Falcons were also selected as a Fall Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). BGSU finished with the fifth best grade point average (3.54) for the fall semester out of all Division I women's programs.
