Bowling Green, Ohio - Today is National Student-Athlete Day (CLICK HERE for information) to recognize the success of student-athletes across the country. At BGSU, our 425 student-athletes are amazing individuals who strive for excellence in the classroom, in the community and in competition. We thank them for all they do!
During the 2014-15 school year (and spring sports are still ongoing), BGSU's student-athletes have compiled an impressive array of awards and honors, including the following:
* 44 Conference (MAC/WCHA) Player of the Week Awards
* 35 Academic All-Conference (MAC/WCHA) Awards
* 23 Distinguished Scholar-Athletes
* 22 All-Conference (MAC/WCHA) Awards
* Seven Academic All-District Awards
* Six MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Awards
In the classroom, Falcon student-athletes are elite. As announced in October (CLICK HERE for story), BGSU's graduation success rate for student-athletes is a model for athletic departments around the country. In the most recent public release of Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, Bowling Green posted its best scores ever (CLICK HERE for story). Our student-athletes have a combined 3.17 cumulative grade point average, which includes a 3.2 GPA from the fall 2014 semester. More than 250 of our student-athletes have a 3.0 GPA or higher and 40 have a perfect 4.0.
In competition, BGSU student-athletes also excel. There are many notable achievements over the past year, including football advancing to the MAC Championship game for the second consecutive year in the fall and playing in a bowl game for the third straight year (defeating South Alabama 33-28 in the inaugural Camellia Bowl). BGSU Hockey was ranked among the top 20 teams in the country all year and won 23 games for the first time since the 1995-96 season, while the men's soccer team advanced to the MAC Championship game. Men's basketball won 20 games for the first time since 2001-02 and won a national postseason tournament victory for the first time in 40 years. Lauren Feely won a gymnastics MAC Championship in the vault and Alyssa Nocella advanced to NCAA Regionals. Brooke Pleger was named an All-American after finishing third in the country in the hammer throw for the track & field team.
All of this would not be possible without the financial support of those who support BGSU Athletics. Please consider becoming a Falcon Club member today to support the scholarship needs of our student-athletes by CLICKING HERE.
