Sophomore standout earns league weekly honor after hitting .455 last week
Bowling Green State University softball standout Aspen Searle has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the East Division. The weekly award winners were announced by the league office on Tuesday (April 7).
Searle earns the honor for the second time this season, having also been named the MAC Player of the Week on March 17. Tuesday's announcement gives BGSU five MAC weekly awards (three Player- and two Pitcher-of-the-Week honors) this season to date.
Searle, a native of Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), hit .455 with a slugging percentage of .955 in the Falcons' six games last week. Searle led the Falcons in at-bats (22), runs scored (7), hits (10), home runs (3), RBI (6) and total bases (21) on the week.
Last Monday (March 31), Searle homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Falcons a 6-5 win over Detroit. She scored three runs in the doubleheader vs. the Titans. Then, she was 5-for-8 at the plate in the Falcons' two games at Northern Illinois Friday afternoon (April 3). She had a hit and drove in a run in the opener, then exploded for four hits in the nightcap.
In that second game at NIU, Searle led off the contest with a single, then had a double in the third. She had another double in the fifth inning, this time plating two teammates to tie the game at 3-3. Searle eventually came around to score as part of a nine-run inning, and homered in the seventh inning to provide some insurance. Searle reached base in all five plate appearances in that game, scoring two runs and driving in three.
On Saturday at Western Michigan (April 4), Searle led the Falcons with two hits, and scored BG's only run of the game. Then, on Sunday, Searle homered to lead off the game, and again led the Brown and Orange with two hits on the day vs. the Broncos.
On the season, Searle is hitting .366 with an on-base percentage of .423 and a team-leading slugging pct. of .763. In addition to slugging pct., she leads BGSU in runs scored (28), hits (34), doubles (9), homers (8), RBI (22) and total bases (71). She has those eight homers this season after hitting three during all of 2014, and has a total of 19 extra-base hits this year after recording nine last year.
In MAC games, Searle is hitting .522 with a slugging percentage of 1.087, leading the team in both categories. She is 12-for-23, and paces the Falcons with seven runs and eight RBI in six conference contests.
So far this season, Searle is hitting an incredible .556 when leading off an inning, having gone 30-for-54 in such situations in 2015.
The Falcons (12-16, 3-3 MAC) are home for four MAC games this weekend, beginning with a Friday (April 10) doubleheader vs. Miami. Then, BGSU will host Ball State in single games on Saturday and Sunday (April 11-12) at Meserve Field. The Falcons are scheduled to play 16 of the next 17 games at home.
