Chardon, Ohio - Day one of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship proved to be a tale of two rounds for the Falcons, as BGSU carded a first round team score of 291, yet struggled over the second round of play in the afternoon with a team score of 311 to end day one on Friday in seventh-place overall at The Mayfield Sand Ridge Club – Sand Ridge Campus in Chardon, Ohio.
The Falcons shot the third lowest team round of the opening 18 holes of play with a score of 291, +3, to head into the second round of play in third-place overall on the team leaderboard. However, the day was not done, as on the second 18 holes, BGSU got off to a rough start over the first four holes and couldn't dig its way out, shooting a second round 311, +23.
With their combined team score of 602, +26, the Falcons are in seventh-place overall out of the nine team field heading into the weekend. BGSU is two shots up on Northern Illinois (604, +28) and four shots ahead of Akron (606, +30).
"I was very pleased with the way we came out and played in the first round. The guys came out and hit the ball well and we were finding greens. However, as we've done all year on days in which we play 36 holes, we struggled to keep our same mental edge and focus over the second round. When we miss hit a few shots or make a mistake, we have got to find a way to get past it and make the next shot," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "I am confident we will bounce back, compete and shoot some low rounds this weekend."
With perhaps the best day overall for the Falcons, sophomore Jose Narro turned in rounds of 74, +2, and 73, +1, for a combined 36-hole score of 147, +3. After posting four birdies and nine pars over the first 18 holes, Narro followed with three birdies and 11 pars over the second round. He sits in a tie for 14th-place overall.
Senior Joe Cooper carded rounds of 74, +2, and 77, +5, to conclude day one in a tie for 22nd-place overall with his 36-hole score of 151, +7. The lefty totaled five birdies and 20 pars overall, which included 13 straight pars over his last nine holes on the first round and the first four holes to start his second round.
Recording the lowest round of the day for BGSU was Ryan Triller with a first round 70, -2 under par. The senior tallied five birdies and 10 pars over his first 18 holes of play. Yet the second round saw the Maryland native struggle throughout the round, posting only one birdie and eight pars en route to an 83, +11. With his 36-hole score of 153, +9, Triller finds himself in a tie for 28th-place overall heading into the final 36 holes of play on the weekend.
Like Triller, fellow Falcon Brett Rinker failed to duplicate his strong first round over the afternoon session, as the sophomore shot a first round 73, +1, and a second round score of 82, +10, to end the day in a tie for 37th-place with a two-round combined score of 155, +11. Rinker matched Triller's team-best five birdies on the first round, yet carded only one birdie over his second round of play which came on his final hole of the day.
Freshman Cameron Michalak tallied back-to-back rounds of 79, +7, good enough to place in a tie for 43rd-place overall with his 36-hole score of 158, +14. Michalak had a total of five birdies over his 36 holes, with four of those birdies coming on the front nine.
Miami, who was paired up with the Falcons all day long, posted rounds of 287 and 289 to take an early team lead with a 36-hole team score 576, even par.
Eight strokes behind Miami is Eastern Michigan (584, +8) in second-place, while Ball State (585, +9) will enter the weekend in third-place overall.
The Falcons are set to tee-off at 11 a.m. on hole No. 1. BGSU is paired up with Northern Illinois and Akron for the third round.
