Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team has worked all year long for this weekend, as the Falcons are ready to compete at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship on May 1-3, in Chardon, Ohio.
Hosted by the University of Akron at The Mayfield Sand Ridge Club – Sand Ridge Campus, the Falcons along with the eight other MAC teams will play a total of 72 holes on the par 72, 7,245-yards on May 1-3. The championship tournament field, which includes Akron, Kent State, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Ball State, Ohio, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green, are slated to play 36 holes on Friday, May 1, and then 18 holes on both Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3.
Head Coach Kevin Farrell and the Falcons will use both an experienced and familiar lineup at the championship event in Jose Narro, Brett Rinker, Joe Cooper, Ryan Triller and Cameron Michalak. All five players have played in at least 10 events for BGSU on the year.
With the third lowest season stroke average in the MAC this season at 73.28, Narro will play in his second MAC Championship tournament this weekend having placed in a tie for 33rd-place overall at the 2014 event with a 72-hole score of 305, +17. The sophomore is coming off a 12th-place finish two weeks ago at the Rutherford Intercollegiate with a 54-hole score of 221, +8, which marked his fourth top-25 finish of the year. Narro has totaled seven sub-par rounds on the year, including a BGSU low round 66 twice – at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Rinker will look to post his second straight top-five finish at the MAC Championships, as the 2013-14 MAC Freshman of the Year carded a 72-hole score of 289, +1, to finish in fifth-place overall to lead the Falcons at last year's conference championship tournament. His fifth-place finish included a BGSU low round 70, -2 under par, and helped earn him MAC Men's Golf All-Tournament Team honors. Ranked second on the team and 10th in the MAC with a stroke average of 74.19 on the year, the sophomore has turned in two top-20 finishes and three sub-par rounds of golf overall, including a season-low 68 at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Making his third appearance at the MAC Championships for the Falcons, Cooper will look to continue his hot play as of late which has included two top-20 finishes at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational and the Rutherford Intercollegiate. In fact, over his last seven rounds of play for the month of April, the senior has shot rounds of 75, 75, 72, 71, 70, 76 and 73, an average of 73.14 overall. Ranked inside the top-20 in the MAC in season stroke average, Cooper will look to finish his MAC career out on a high note having finished in a 28th at the 2013 championship event and in 40th at last year's tournament with identical 72-hole scores of 313, +25.
Like Cooper, Triller will also be playing in his third MAC Championship for BGSU, having finished in a tie for ninth-place (299) at the 2013 event and in a tie for 33rd-place overall (305) last spring. The senior, who has posted a stroke average of 75.86 on the season, has been solid for the Falcons all season long on the final round of play, carding an average score of 73.90 on the final 18-holes over his 10 tournaments this season. With a low round 69 on the season, which he did twice, Triller will look to put four strong rounds of golf together over the three-day event to help put the Falcons in contention for the conference championship win.
Making his MAC Championship tournament debut for the Falcons will be Michalak. However, the freshman is no longer a newcomer for Coach Farrell and BGSU, as he has played in 10 events for the Falcons this season. Michalak has posted a stroke average of 76.93 over 27 rounds of play on the year and will look to make an impact for the Falcons this weekend.
Last year at the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Championships, the Falcons as a team carded a 72-hole score of 1,194, +42, to finish in sixth-place overall after finishing in fifth-place at the 2013 championships with a score of 1,220, +68.
The Falcons last recorded a team finish higher than fifth-place back in 1994-95, when BGSU took second-place overall.
BGSU will tee-off its 2015 MAC Championship at 8:30 a.m. on hole No. 10 on Friday, May 1. The Falcons are paired up with the RedHawks of Miami (Ohio) for the first day of play.
