List of 129 teams (including BGSU Tennis) to have a perfect all-time score
Indianapolis, Ind. - Four Bowling Green State University athletic programs received NCAA Public Recognition today, given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). BGSU men's cross country, women's golf, tennis and volleyball were among the 1,124 Division I teams honored.
Â
"The coaches and student-athletes of these four teams truly deserve the national recognition today for their achievements," Chet Hesson, Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services, said. "This recognition is a testament to BGSU's goal of graduating all of its student-athletes."
Â
BGSU tennis earned the award for their 10th consecutive season and is one of just 129 teams among all sports to have earned NCAA Public Recognition in every year since its inception. In fact, BGSU tennis has had a perfect 1,000 in every year of the APR's existence. Only two MAC programs are recognized among that exclusive list of 129 teams (along with Kent State women's cross country).
Across the entire 12-team Mid-American Conference, just 17 teams received NCAA Public Recognition. BGSU was the only school in which four teams were honored and five schools did not have a single team recognized among the top 10 percent.
Â
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 27. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
Â
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with a record 953 teams earning a perfect APR.
Â
"We congratulate each of the teams and individual student-athletes for their dedication to academic success," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. "This achievement demonstrates their hard work and the commitment of NCAA member schools to provide students with an opportunity to succeed academically and athletically."
A total of 289 Division I schools placed at least one team on the top APR list, up 15 from last year. Dartmouth College had the most teams (26) recognized, followed by Brown University (19), Bucknell University (19) and Stanford University (19)
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.
