July 22, 2015 | Women's Golf
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head women's golf coach Stephanie Young has named former Falcon golfer John Powers as an assistant coach effective immediately. Powers played for the BGSU men's golf team from 2006-10.
"I am thrilled to announce John Powers as the next assistant coach of the BGSU women's golf program. His resume speaks for itself. John has so many different experiences and the timing is right for both of us to bring him on staff," commented Coach Young. "John is hard working, trustworthy, and so creative in both his approach to the game and his coaching style. We are very excited to get the 2015-16 season underway."
Powers, who is no stranger to Bowling Green having played at BGSU from 2006-10, has collegiate coaching experience having been the head men's golf coach at St. Bonaventure University from 2011-14.
While at St. Bonaventure, Powers coached Josh Stauffer who earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors and finished third overall at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Tournament. Stauffer also earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors a total of three times as a freshman in 2012-13.
Powers also had a golfer in Brian McKenna earn Academic All-American honors in both 2013 and 2012.
"I am proud to return to BGSU to begin working with Coach Young and the women's golf team," Powers stated. "The program has made significant strides in recent years and I am looking forward to lending my experience from both the collegiate and professional levels to help this program continue to rise in the MAC."
As a Falcon, Powers played in a total of 43 events for BGSU over his four year career. He posted a career stroke average of 75.18 over 123 rounds of play and recorded a career-low round of 67 at the 2009 Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate his senior season. Powers went on to record 10 top-15 place finishes during his time at BGSU, including earning medalist honors at the 2007 UD Spring Invitational with a first-place tournament low score of 226. He also posted a second-place finish at both the 2008 and the 2009 Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate events and a third-place finish at the 2009 John Piper Intercollegiate.
In his freshman campaign in 2006-07, he ranked second on the Falcon roster with a 75.60 stroke average.
During his amateur career, Powers qualified for three USGA National Championships. In 2005 he placed 15th in the USGA Junior Amateur Championship and earned a spot in the USGA Public Links Championship. He again qualified for the USGA Public Links in 2007.
Since graduating in 2010, Powers has continued to play golf professionally where he has posted high finishes in State Open Championships in Ohio and New York as well as a victory at the Kane Pro-Am in 2014 on the mini tour level.
Prior to his time at St. Bonaventure, Powers was a golf club intern at Ohio State University during the 2010 golfing season. While working for the Buckeyes, Powers assisted the head professional with daily golf operations and gained tournament operations experience with the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.
Most recently Powers has served as a professional caddy on the LPGA Symetra Tour. He has also caddied in three LPGA Tour events including the 2013 Women's U.S. Open.
"It is an honor for me to have him back to campus and coaching alongside me. I have watched him grow up from a junior prospect and student-athlete to a Division I head coach, golf professional, and tour caddy," continued Young. "He has experienced success at every level. Coach Powers will make an immediate impact on this program with the players, the community, fellow alums, and coaching staff."
Powers graduated from BGSU with his undergraduate degree in sport management with an emphasis in sport marketing. While with the Falcons, he was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He went on to complete his master's degree in integrated marketing communications at St. Bonaventure.
