Albuquerque, N.M. – In a strong tournament field that included six top-50 nationally ranked programs from last year, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team posted a top-10 team finish led by junior Jose Narro's sixth-place showing at the 2015 William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship South Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 25-26.
Bowling Green turned in team rounds of 298, 293 and 298 for the two-day event to finish in a tie with TCU for ninth-place overall with a combined team score of 889, +25. With their ninth-place finish the Falcons finished in front of Colorado (896), Nevada (897), Louisiana Tech (907), Arizona (911), UTEP (916) and Denver (919) in the 16-team field.
The Falcons finished just two strokes behind eighth-place New Mexico State (887) and only five strokes behind seventh-place San Diego (884).
"I am proud of the way the guys played not just today, but for the tournament overall. This is a really tough course and the tournament has a lot of strong teams in it each year," head coach Kevin Farrell commented. "This helped us measure ourselves against some nationally ranked teams and showed our guys that when we play the way we are capable of playing we can compete with anyone."
For the second straight tournament this fall season, Narro was the top Falcon golfer with a sub-par 54-hole score and a top-10 finish. The junior carded rounds of 72, 68 and 73 to post a 54-hole score of 213, -3 under par, and place in a tie for sixth-place overall. The Tampico, Mexico native was stellar on the front nine with nine birdies over the three rounds of play, as he finished the tournament with an eagle, 11 birdies and 33 pars overall.
Fellow upperclassmen Brett Rinker shot a round of 75, +3, on Saturday to post rounds of 70, 72 and 75 and finish in a tie for 16th-place overall with a three-round combined score of 217, +1. The junior was consistent over all three rounds of play with eight birdies and a team-high 37 pars.
"I'm excited about the way that the upperclassmen (Jose and Brett) played this weekend," continued Farrell. "They are our two leaders and our most experienced golfers, so when they play well, hit fairways and greens, it feeds off to the other guys and their games."
Freshman Pablo Heredia Iglesias dropped three shots of his second round score to shoot a 74, +2, over the third round of play. With his rounds of 76, 77 and 74, Iglesias finished in a tie for 49th-place overall with his 54-hole score of 227, +11. He registered 10 birdies and 26 pars on the weekend.
Like Iglesias, BGSU's Cameron Michalak turned in his best round of the tournament on Saturday with a final round of 76, +4. Michalak picked up rounds of 80, 78 and 76 for a 54-hole score of 234, +18, to place him in a tie for 81st-place overall.
Rounding out the lineup for the Falcons was Mitchell Kontak, as the sophomore ended the tournament in 99th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 249, +33. Kontak recorded rounds of 84, 76 and 89 for the two-day event.
New Mexico held on to win its fourth straight William H. Tucker Intercollegiate with a score of 840, -24 under par, finishing ahead of Texas Tech (859), UNLV (868), Colorado State (868) and San Diego State (872).
The Falcons will be back in action on Oct. 5-6 when they will take part in the Cleveland State Invitational held at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio.
