Jinks Hires Three To Finalize Coaching Staff

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – With National Signing Day just a few weeks away, Bowling Green State University Head Football Coach Mike Jinks has announced the hiring of three coaches to round out his on-field coaching staff for the 2016 season. Matt Brock, Stephen Hamby and Benny Morrison will join Jinks' staff at BGSU.
"I'm excited to finalize the assistant coaching staff with the addition of three great coaches," Jinks said. "All three bring unique backgrounds and experiences to our coaching staff which will benefit our football program. We look forward to having our full staff on the road recruiting future Falcons!"
Matt Brock (Special Teams Coordinator/Assistant Defensive Line)
Matt Brock joins the staff of head coach Mike Jinks after coaching at Texas Tech for the last three seasons. Brock will serve as the special teams coordinator and assistant defensive line coach for the Falcons in 2016.
"I am honored to be a part of Bowling Green State University and the football program," Brock stated. "I am grateful for the opportunity provided to me and my wife by Coach Jinks and Athletic Director Chris Kingston. We are very excited to be a part of this community, university, and the tradition of BGSU Football. I look forward to working with the staff that Coach Jinks has assembled and cannot wait to build on the winning culture that surrounds Falcon Football."
In each of the last three seasons, Brock served as a defensive quality control assistant for the Red Raiders. He also coached the defensive line in the Texas Bowl against LSU in 2015. Brock was promoted to inside linebackers coach early in the 2014 season following the departure of defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt and served in that capacity during the remainder of that season.
In 2015, Brock assisted with the defensive line and was responsible for presenting installation for the defensive unit and position groups. He also assisted in the on-campus recruitment of student-athletes and organized off-campus recruiting. Brock assisted a defensive unit that ranked 17th in the country in turnovers gained during the 2015 campaign.
In 2014, Brock spent the majority of the season as the inside linebackers coach, developing Sam Eguavoen, an All-Big 12 linebacker. He assisted in developing the game plan each week and was directly involved in analysis and evaluation on game day. During the 2013 season, Brock's first with the Red Raiders, he coached Will Smith who garnered All-Big 12 honors along with being named Holiday Bowl Defensive Player of the Game. Smith was drafted in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys.
Brock was the defensive quality control coach in his first season at Tech in 2013. He went to Texas Tech following two seasons at Baker University, his alma mater, where he served as a graduate assistant coach.
He spent two seasons at Baker (2011-12) overseeing the team's linebackers and assisted Baker defensive coordinator Jason Thoren in the coaches' booth on game day. Brock was also the defensive coordinator of the Baker JV team. In addition, Brock assisted with the kickoff and punt teams.
Brock also coordinated Baker's strength and conditioning program during his tenure as a graduate assistant coach.
Brock was a linebacker during his collegiate playing career at Baker. He tallied 277 career tackles and posted seven interceptions while leading the league in total tackles and tackles per game in 2010.
A 2009 and 2010 all-conference pick, Brock was a two-time Academic All-American and earned several team most valuable player awards. Brock graduated from Baker in 2011 while majoring in physical education. Brock is married to his wife, Alyssa.
Stephen Hamby (Offensive Line)
Stephen Hamby joins the coaching staff of head coach Mike Jinks at BGSU in 2016. Hamby, who played at Texas Tech from 2004-08, will coach the offensive line for the Falcons.
"What an amazing time it is to be accepted into the nest of Falcons," Hamby commented. "With absolute gratitude I thank Head Coach Mike Jinks and Athletic Director Chris Kingston for making this a reality. God's path has led me to a very unique and special place. BGSU, it's time to get loud, physical and fast."
During the last three seasons, Hamby has served Texas Tech as the assistant offensive line coach under Kliff Kingsbury. Hamby has been directly responsible for coaching the team's centers, while assisting with on- and off-field instruction of the offensive line. During game weeks, the former Red Raiders center has helped with film breakdown and the run game planning. Hamby has also been directly involved in all aspects of Texas Tech's recruiting during his three seasons, analyzing offensive line prospects and assisting with all recruiting materials.
An offensive lineman with the Red Raiders, Hamby helped Texas Tech to a 37-16 record and four consecutive bowl appearances. TTU played in the Cotton Bowl twice, the Insight Bowl and the Gator Bowl during Hamby's four seasons in Lubbock. Following his career at TTU, Hamby was invited to training camp with both the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints.
Hamby graduated from Texas Tech in August 2009 with a degree in Agriculture and Applied Economics.
Benny Morrison (Linebackers)
Benny Morrison joins the staff of head coach Mike Jinks in 2016 and will be responsible for the Falcons linebackers. Morrison most recently served as a graduate assistant on the defensive side of the ball at the University of South Florida.

During his season spent at South Florida, Morrison helped the Bulls to an 8-4 record, including a 5-0 record in the American Athletic Conference's East Division. He mentored defensive end Eric Lee, who was named second team All-AAC. The Bulls ranked 22nd in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 21.1 points per game.
Prior to coaching at South Florida, Morrison was a graduate assistant at UTSA under Perry Eliano. Morrison was a graduate assistant for three seasons with the Roadrunners, where he worked with the defensive linemen. He was responsible for breaking down and organizing opponents' film, instructing the scout team, generating practice schedules and scripts and assisting with the recruiting process.
In his final season at UTSA, Morrison helped the Roadrunners to the second-best rushing defense in CUSA. He coached second team All-CUSA defensive end Robert Singletary and honorable mention All-CUSA players Cody Rogers and Ashaad Mabry.
In 2013, Morrison helped lead UTSA to a 7-5 overall record, including victories over a pair of bowl teams. The Roadrunners finished second in the West Division with a 6-2 mark in their first season in Conference USA. He helped mentor a defense that forced 14 turnovers (6 fumbles/ 8 INTs) and allowed only 143.1 rushing yards per game in 2013, including holding three opponents to less than 100 yards. The defensive linemen combined for 249 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, 17 quarterback hurries and eight pass breakups. Defensive end Codie Brooks was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team and earned honorable mention accolades alongside defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry and defensive end Robert Singletary.
In his first year with the Roadrunners in 2012, the program registered an 8-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in its first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The campaign was highlighted by historic wins against South Alabama, the program's first road and Football Bowl Subdivision victory, and New Mexico State, its first league win. The defense forced 29 turnovers (16 fumbles/13 interceptions), which led to 22 scores (15 TDs/7 FGs), and defensive tackle Franky Anaya earned second-team All-WAC accolades.
Morrison came to UTSA from Montana State, where he spent the 2011 season as the special teams intern. He helped the Bobcats to a 10-3 record, the Big Sky Championship and the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs.
The Lincolnshire, Ill., native was a four-year letterwinner at Drake from 2007-10, where he played linebacker for then UTSA defensive coordinator Neal Neathery. He garnered second-team All-Pioneer Football League and conference all-academic team honors, was an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team finalist and won the team's Torchbearer Award — voted on by players and coaches as team's top leader — as a senior. Morrison ranked second on the team with 71 tackles (39 solo), including 5.5 for loss and a pair of sacks. He also had a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery to help the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record. The co-captain picked up Pioneer League co-Defensive Player of the Week accolades and was an honorable mention FCS Defensive Linebacker of the Week pick.
As a junior, Morrison was an honorable mention all-conference and academic honor roll selection. He ranked fourth on the squad with 75 stops (35 solo), including 14.5 for 48 yards in loss and 4.5 sacks. He blocked two kicks, forced and recovered three fumbles and intercepted one pass to help Drake to an 8-3 record. As a sophomore he led the Bulldogs in tackles with 55 and he topped the Pioneer League with 87 stops and three fumble recoveries as a freshman in 2007.
An active volunteer, he organized or participated in community service events at Blank's Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, the "Go Bulldog" Reading Program, Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House and Boys & Girls Club.
Following his playing career, Morrison was a student intern with Drake during the Spring 2011 season, where he assisted with the linebackers, defensive scout team and official recruiting visits.
Morrison earned his bachelor's degree in education from Drake in May 2011 and a masters from UTSA in December 2013. He is married to his wife, Danielle.
