BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend with a 3-0 victory on the road against the University at Buffalo on Saturday (Oct. 8) evening. The Falcons defeated the Bulls by a score of 25-18; 25-23; 23. The Orange and Brown are now a staggering 8-1 in matches away from the Stroh Center.
Bowling Green now owns an overall record of 13-6. The Falcons are 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play. BGSU beat Akron last night, and went 2-0 in MAC play across a single weekend for the first time since November of 2014.
"It's always great to win, especially on the road. We reached another milestone that we set out for ourselves, and that was to win back-to-back away matches," said head coach Danijela Tomic. "I am proud of our team for finding a way to win again tonight, even when we were playing from behind in the second and third sets.
"Our team showed that we are maturing and developing more resiliency and mental toughness, because we performed better in the red zone than we did last weekend. Next week, we will get back to the gym and work on the things that were exposed as areas that we need to improve on, and that will allow us to continue to get better as team."
Madeline Garda posted 26 digs in the victory, bumping her nation-leading average of digs per set up to 6.63. On the weekend, Garda notched 61 digs, as she picked up 35 digs in last night's four-set win over Akron. For the weekend, Garda averaged a ridiculous 8.71 digs per set. The senior also leads the country in total digs with 444.
Also on the defensive end, Kallie Seimet had a nice match with 12 digs. Paulina Iacobelli picked up seven digs.
For the second-consecutive match, Isabelle Marciniak registered 40-plus assists as BGSU's primary setter. The freshman notched 41 assists, and also had four kills, four digs and three blocks.
Offensively, Jelena Sunjic led the way with 19 kills. The senior hit .250 (19-7-48), and notched five digs, as well. Isabel Kovacic was very efficient, and racked up 12 kills, while hitting .367 (12-1-30). Kovacic also had four digs.
Jessi Holly nearly posted a double-double, as she had eight kills and seven digs, while Alyssa Maloney chipped in with three kills, four digs and five blocks. Madeline Brandewie hit .294 (5-0-17), had zero attack errors, and recorded five kills.
The Falcons will finish off a four-match road swing next weekend with matches at Eastern Michigan (Oct. 14) and Central Michigan (Oct. 15). Bowling Green will then return to the Stroh Center to host Ball State on Oct. 21, before staging a Battle of I-75 showdown with Toledo on Oct. 22.Â
