Falcons Power Past Buffalo
November 11, 2016 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Senior Jelena Sunjic had 21 kills and seven service aces as the Bowling Green volleyball team swept Buffalo 26-24, 25-15, 25-14 Friday night at the Stroh Center. The Falcons hit .410 for the match to improve to 19-9 on the season and 9-6 in Mid-American Conference play.
"Jelena was just unbelievable," BGSU head coach Danijela Tomic said. "This was one of her best matches this year. Those are just All-American numbers and she kept us in the match in the first set."
BGSU had just eight attack errors for the match and Sunjic recorded her 21 kills on just 32 swings without a single attack error. Isabelle Marciniak guided the offense with 34 assists and Madeline Garda posted 14 digs. Garda has 647 digs this year, leading the country, and now sits just 17 digs away from breaking Bowling Green's single-season record.
The Falcons won a tense first set and were never really threatened after that point. Sunjic had three consecutive aces midway through that opening frame to come from two down to take a 14-12 lead. With the set tied at 24-24, Sunjic had a kill and then Buffalo had an error as the Falcons got the initial set victory.
In that first set, there were 16 ties and six lead changes. Over the final two sets, the teams combined for just four ties and one lead change as the Falcons took over early in both frames.
BGSU had 10 service aces for the match and held Buffalo to just one. Bowling Green held a 42-35 edge in digs.
"Our serving was the weapon that kept Buffalo out of system," Tomic said. "It made it a little bit easier for us to defend them because they have dangerous hitters that are hard to stop when they are in system."
Buffalo falls to 4-24 overall with the loss and 3-12 in conference play. With the win, BGSU keeps pace with Ball State for fourth place in the MAC. Both teams are 9-6 heading into the final day of the regular season. The No. 4 seed will earn a bye through the first round of the MAC Tournament.
Bowling Green will host Akron Saturday at 5 pm for Senior Night, honoring Delaney Arkeilpane, Garda, Alyssa Maloney and Sunjic.
