Walker, Tibbs Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
February 22, 2016 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Sean Walker and women's basketball player Lauren Tibbs.
Male Athlete of the Week
Sean Walker, a junior from Keswick, Ontario, helped the Falcons hold Alaska to just three goals during the weekend series, while providing some offensive help of his own. Playing on the larger Olympic ice sheet with just five defensemen both games due to illness, Walker guided an effort that held the Nanooks to just 22 shots in Saturday's 4-1 Bowling Green win despite three freshmen and a sophomore among the team's five healthy defensemen. He was a team-best +2 on-ice during the weekend and added offensive firepower Saturday. Walker's power play shot from the point in the first period beat Alaska goalie Jesse Jenks and got the Falcons on the scoreboard in an eventual win. He followed that up with an assist on Mark Cooper's shorthanded goal that put BGSU ahead 3-0. Walker also posted an assist Friday night on the Falcons' lone goal of a 2-1 loss.
Female Athlete of the Week
Lauren Tibbs, a senior from Taylor Mill, Ky., led the Falcons in a plethora of categories as BGSU split a pair of games last week. Tibbs averaged 23.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots against Toledo and Kent State. She shot 66.7 percent from the field (20-of-30) and a perfect 100 percent from three-point range (5-for-5) in the two games. Tibbs had a season-high 22 points vs. the Rockets, then topped that total with 24 points at KSU. In the UT game, she had a game-high nine rebounds and tied for game honors with three blocks, and the Falcons' center was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Tibbs made 9-of-15 shots from the field in that game. At KSU, Tibbs led all players in points (24), rebounds (eight) and blocks (four), and she added a pair of assists and a steal. Tibbs went 11-of-15 from the field and again was perfect (2-for-2) from three-point range.
