April 29, 2026 | Women's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Fred Chmiel has announced the addition of Aurélie Vanderstraeten to the program. Vanderstraeten, a 6-3 power forward, will join the Falcon family for the 2026-27 academic year.
Vanderstraeten, an incoming freshman, is a native of Antwerp, Belgium. She has played the last two seasons for Koninklijk Basket Team ION Waregem DSE in Belgium-Top Division Women.
In the 2025-26 season, she averaged 9.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 28.4 minutes per game for Waregem. Vanderstraeten had 13 double-digit scoring games and nine double-figure rebounding contests in 24 games. She had seven double-doubles on the season.
Three years ago, Vanderstraeten represented Belgium at the FIBA U16 Women's European Championship in Izmir, Turkey. She has also played for her country at the FIBA Women's EuroBasket, at the U16 level in 2024 and the U18 level in '25.
"Aurélie has the size and skill to play multiple forward positions," said Chmiel. "With great experience internationally, her impact should be immediate. She is a great perimeter threat and has a rapidly developing interior game, and will be an incredible asset to our team."
