McLain, Carrillo Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
February 29, 2016 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Swimming & Diving
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Mitch McLain and swimmer Daniela Carrillo.
Male Athlete of the Week
Mitch McLain, a sophomore from Baxter, Minn., had two goals and two assists as Bowling Green hockey swept Ferris State over the weekend to complete WCHA play with an 8-1-5 record at the BGSU Ice Arena. McLain was +2 on the weekend and scored twice in 4:15 of the third period Saturday to turn a 2-2 tied into a 6-2 win. After teammate Kevin Dufour tied the game at 3:14 of the third, McLain scored the game winner just two minutes later. Just over four minutes after that, he added a key insurance goal and gave him his first career multi-goal game. That performance followed on the heels of Friday night's come-from-behind victory in which McLain posted the primary assist on the Falcons' first two goals to overcome a two-goal deficit. It was the first four-point weekend of McLain's career.
Female Athlete of the Week
Daniela Carrillo, a senior from Hermosillo, Mexico, won the MAC Championship in the 200 breaststroke, setting a school record time of 2:10.01, just 0.22 seconds shy of the MAC record in the event. Carrillo, who was named first team All-MAC, also broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.57. That came on the heels of breaking the school record during the morning prelims in 1:00.65. Carrillo was also a member of the 200 medley relay team that broke a school record on day one of the meet, completing the event in 1:39.26.
