Scott “Scooter” Jess to Retire After 30 Years of Service to Bowling Green State University Athletics

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – After more than three decades of dedicated service to Falcon student-athletes, longtime equipment manager Scott Jess will retire this summer, closing a remarkable chapter in the history of Bowling Green State University Athletics. Jess is currently the longest-tenured employee in BGSU Athletics.
Jess will be honored prior to baseball's May 8 home game against Western Michigan. He will throw out the first pitch prior to the game.
Affectionately known as "Scooter," Jess has been a constant presence behind the scenes since joining the Falcons during the 1995-96 season. For 30 years, he has played a vital role in the success of BGSU Hockey, managing the ice arena equipment room, sharpening skates, and ensuring the Orange and Brown were always ready for competition. His attention to detail and tireless work ethic made him a trusted figure within the program and a beloved member of the Falcon hockey family.
"Over more than 30 years, Scott Jess has been the backbone of our program behind the scenes," said BGSU Ice Hockey Head Coach Dennis Williams. "He's sharpened thousands of skates, handled countless sticks, and made sure our guys had what they needed every single day to compete at a high level. He's has been a huge part of the personality of our locker room. Those diamondcutter celebrations after sweeps are legendary and something our players will never forget. Scott has built relationships, created memories, and left a lasting mark on Bowling Green hockey. He'll be deeply missed, but his legacy will always be a part of this program."
In addition to his work with hockey, Jess has served as the head equipment specialist for multiple BGSU programs, including baseball, tennis, golf and swimming. His impact has extended across the department, supporting generations of student-athletes and coaches with professionalism and care.
"Scott Jess is one of the legends of not just BGSU Baseball, but of Bowling Green State University Athletics," said BGSU Baseball Head Coach Kyle Hallock. "He has performed for our program at the highest level day in and day out for three decades. All of our current players, alumni, coaches past and present, greatly appreciate Scott's contributions in our program's successes over the years. Congratulations on an outstanding career, Scoot Dog."
A native of Clyde, Ohio, Jess brought extensive professional experience to Bowling Green. Prior to his arrival, he spent six seasons in the East Coast Hockey League, including three years with the Raleigh Ice Caps (1992-95), along with earlier stops with the Richmond Renegades (1990-92) and the Virginia Lancers (1989-90). During his time in Richmond, Jess was honored with the organization's Outstanding Service Award for the 1991-92 season.
Jess earned his undergraduate degree in sports management from Miami University (Ohio) in 1989, where he also minored in sports medicine. While in Oxford, he served as a student equipment manager for the hockey program, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in athletics.
He is a member of both the American Equipment Managers Association and the National Hockey League Trainers Association.
Jess and his wife, Sandy (Lorenzen), have been part of the Bowling Green community throughout his tenure.
Scott Jess leaves behind a legacy defined by loyalty, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to student-athlete success. His presence will be deeply missed across Falcon Athletics, but his contributions will continue to be felt for years to come.
