Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green men's basketball head coach Michael Huger is excited to announce that the Falcon men's basketball program will be taking a once in a lifetime cultural immersion tour of Italy this August.
This expedition of Italy will be an 11-day adventure for the Falcons from Aug. 8-18, in which the student-athletes will not only play a number of games against top flight competition, but will also get a chance to explore and better understand the European culture during their time in Italy.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our men's basketball team to experience Europe. Italy is a fascinating country so rich in history and tradition," stated Coach Huger. "We will be able to practice and play games, while also getting the chance to tour some of the best cities Italy has to offer. This happens once in a lifetime for most of us. I would like to thank Bill Frack and the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, because without their contributions and support of BGSU Athletics, and in particular our men's basketball program, this unbelievable opportunity would not be possible for our student-athletes."
Funded in part by the endowment set forth by Mr. William "Bill" Frack in 2014, this experience will serve as a great educational opportunity for the men's basketball program to undertake as a team. The Falcons together will have a unique academic experience, while immersing themselves in the European cultural with first-hand experiences that are second to none.
The BGSU men's basketball team last took a foreign tour to Canada in 2011, which included three games, while in the summer of 2000 the Falcons played six games in Chile.
Mr. Frack was a part of the Falcon's foreign tour to Chile and also accompanied the men's basketball team on trips to Hawaii and Puerto Rico during regular season holiday tournaments.
"Trips like this are part of what makes college athletics such a special opportunity for young people to continue their developmental journey through life. The perspective gained from international travel, as well as the enhanced understanding and appreciation of foreign populations and cultures, is something that these students will carry with them throughout their lives," stated BGSU Senior Associate A.D. Kit Hughes, who works directly with the men's basketball program. "The impact this tour will have on our team from an academic, personal, and leadership perspective cannot be overstated."
Per the NCAA Foreign Tour Legislation in Bylaw 17.29, an institution can engage in a foreign tour in each sport once every four years. A tour may only be scheduled during the summer-vacation period between the institution's spring and fall terms or during an academic year vacation period published in the institution's official catalog.
Falcon fans are being offered the chance to travel as a part of the official team travel party with the men's basketball program during the tour. If interested in learning more about how to join the Falcons in Italy, fans are encouraged to contact Dan Meyer, Associate A.D. for Development, at dbmeyer@bgsu.edu or call 419-372-7057 by Apr. 1.
