Three Falcon Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition For APR Success
April 13, 2016 | General, Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Gymnastics
Indianapolis, Ind. - Three Bowling Green State University athletic programs received NCAA Public Recognition today, given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). BGSU men's cross country, women's golf and gymnastics were among the 1,071 Division I teams honored.
Â
"Our goal of graduating our student-athletes at a high rate is something that we take a lot of pride in here at BGSU," Chet Hesson, Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services, said. "The three teams that finished in the top 10 percent in their respective sports shows that our department goals are being met and our mission to serve these young men and women is realized by their successes academically."
Across the entire 12-team Mid-American Conference, just 20 teams received NCAA Public Recognition. BGSU was one of three schools with at least three teams honored. Ten of the 12 MAC institutions had at least one team recognized.
Â
APRs for all Division I teams will be released April 20. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
Â
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with 944 teams earning a perfect APR.
Brown University earned the highest number of Public Recognition Awards (21), followed by Dartmouth College (19), Bucknell University (17) and Stanford University (17). One-hundred teams from The Ivy League were recognized – the most of any conference – followed by the Patriot League (94), Atlantic Coast Conference (81) and Big Ten Conference (69).
Â
Gonzaga University led all schools with the highest percentage of its teams (80 percent) among those at the top of the APR list. More than three-quarters of Lafayette College's teams made the list.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
